Terriers Drop Both Games In University Heights

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – May 1, 2024 – Hiram lost both of its games to John Carroll University on Wednesday afternoon, 13-3 and 5-3, at Schweickert Field.

The Terriers nearly matched their opposition in hits in both of the games, as they now prepare for one final conference doubleheader in 2024.

Game 1

Hiram drew first blood in the second inning, when Ethan Ryan continued his late-season surge with an RBI single to center field. Ryan is now hitting .333 this season, which ranks second on the team.

Right behind Ryan in batting average is Evan Fairbanks (.326), who hit his team-high eighth home run of the year in the fifth inning, a two-run shot that plated Matthew Trimble. Fairbanks' 17 home runs are tied for the second-most in program history, trailing only Dominic Yazkek (18 from 2001-03).

John Carroll scored the final nine runs of the game to pull away and take the first contest of the afternoon.

Game 2

The long ball once again provided the highlights for Hiram in Game 2, as Hal Walker Jr. led off the game with his second career long ball (also in 2022). The junior first baseman finished the game with two hits; his 57 hits this season rank fourth for hits in a single season in program history (record is 63, but Mike Dobran in 1998).

The back-and-forth affair also included a sacrifice fly by AJ Caggiano and an RBI single by Walker Jr. Caggiano also had his first career hit in what was his first collegiate start.

The Blue Streaks won the game thanks to the middle of their batting order, with their four and five hitters combining for five RBI to hold onto the lead. Jack Conley pitched two shutout innings in relief, but the Terriers fell just short in the final non-conference game of the campaign.

What's Next

Hiram will head to Greencastle, IN for a twin bill with DePauw on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m at Walker Field.
