HIRAM, Ohio – April 30, 2024 – Hiram baseball lost both games of its doubleheader to Kenyon, 10-2 and 15-5, on Tuesday afternoon at Fishel Field.
The twin bill marked the final home games of the season for the team, with a pair of doubleheaders still on the schedule for the remainder of the week.
Game 1
Jacob Koces continued his strong run of pitching, working at least seven innings for the third time this season. Despite hitter-friendly conditions, with the wind blowing out, Koces allowed just four earned runs and took a hard-fought loss: 7 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K.
John Bender doubled to the left-center field gap and eventually came around to score on a fielding error. Bender finished the day as one of five student-athletes on the team to be batting at least .300 this season.
Evan Fairbanks delivered an RBI single in the eighth inning to cut the margin to 9-2, but the Owls held on and improved their conference record to 7-6 with the Game 1 victory.
Game 2
The second game included a combined 20 runs and 27 hits, with the sun finally peaking through the Hiram sky for the home finale.
Ethan Lyke welcomed that sunlight with his first career home run, a two-run shot over the left-field wall to make the score 3-2 in favor of Kenyon.
One inning later, Hiram scored another two runs thanks to its underclassmen:
Matthew Trimble scored on a throwing error after a bunt single by
Ethan Ryan, while
Logan Gallentine doubled in a pair of runs on a perfectly placed ball down the left-field line. At that point, the Terriers had leveled the score at 5-5.
Kenyon fired back with an eight-run fifth inning, which eventually propelled the road team to a victory in seven innings.
What's Next
Hiram will travel to University Heights, Ohio to take on John Carroll on Wednesday; the two teams will play a pair of seven-inning games beginning at 1 p.m. from Schweickert Field.
