GRANVILLE, Ohio - April 20, 2024 — On Saturday afternoon at Big Red Field, Hiram took on Denison University, the No. 2 team in Division III baseball. The doubleheader was a tough task that resulted in two losses (22-0 and 10-3).Â
Despite losing, Hiram responded well in Game 2 of the doubleheader, scoring three runs in the sixth inning on a pair of RBI singles by Matthew Trimble and Evan Fairbanks. Fairbanks later came around to score on a passed ball, marking Hiram's scoring for the day.
Denison is now 27-3 this season, which includes a 9-1 clip in conference play. The Big Red have lost just once since returning from their Florida trip in the middle of March (7-4 loss to OWU on April 9).
In Game 1, Terriers right-hander Sam Boyle pitched two scoreless innings to start the day before an unfortunate error led to multiple unearned runs in the third frame. Connor Bansek and Fairbanks each recorded base hits in the middle of the Hiram lineup to mark the offensive production.
In Game 2, Hiram got multi-hit performances from Hal Walker Jr., Fairbanks and Logan Gallentine. Nicolas Chernitsky started the game and worked five strong frames, which marked the most innings from any Terriers pitcher on the day.
A quick turnaround is in store for the Terriers, as they will head to Erie, PA on Monday and take on Penn State Behrend at 4 p.m. for a non-conference matchup.
