5-Run 7th Inning Gives Terriers Winning Finish In DH Split With Pitt Greensburg

Hiram Gets Back In Win Column, Enters Weekend With Momentum

GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania - April 18, 2024 - The Terriers baseball team split their doubleheader with the Pitt Greensburg Panthers, losing 9-1 in Game 1 and coming away with a 7-5 victory in Game 2. The split moves the Terriers to 13-15 on the season and 5-7 on the road.

Game 1 Recap

Hiram's bats were stymied in Game 1, as they were held to one-or-zero runs for just the fourth time this season. Mason Boehm was terrific on the mound for the Panthers going the full seven innings, giving up just one earned run on five hits, and striking out three batters. Boehm got 11 flyouts and six groundouts, making just 88 pitches in his first career complete game.

Outfielder John Bender drove in Hiram's only run in the fourth inning, bringing in Connor Banseck with a sacrifice fly.

Jack Conley got the start for Hiram and went 5.1 innings, giving up five earned runs on 107 pitches while striking out eight. The junior right-hander's eight strikeouts extended his team lead in punchouts for the season (40).

Game 2 Recap

Hiram was victorious in the second game of the doubleheader thanks to a five-run seventh inning; Pitt Greensburg had scored five straight runs to take a 5-2 lead entering the seventh frame.

The Terriers got the scoring started early on Matthew Trimble's two-run double, which brought home Chaisson Marrs and Hal Walker Jr. Those were Trimble's team-leading 33rd and 34th RBI of the season.

The Panthers answered back in a big way, scoring five consecutive runs: two in the first, one in the third and two in the fourth.

However, in the seventh, the Terriers rallied for five runs, beginning with a solo blast by Connor Bansek to cut the deficit to two runs. It marked the second baseman's first home run of the season. The Terriers then got two on a Tyler Fernandez single to right-center field and the ultimate go-ahead knock from Ethan Lyke, who had a two-run single to score Ethan Ryan and Logan Gallentine.

Landin Wescott was huge out of the bullpen for Hiram; the righty reliever gave the Terriers three innings of one-hit relief, with no runs and three strikeouts on the stat line. He picked up his second win of the year to move to 2-1 and lower his ERA to an impressive 1.29.

What's Next

The Terriers are back in action on Saturday with a conference doubleheader, when they travel to Denison with first pitch of Game 21 scheduled for 12 p.m.
