Balanced Offense, Pitching Propels Hiram To 14-3 Win Over Westminster

Terriers Protect Home Field On Wednesday

HIRAM, Ohio – April 10, 2024 – Hiram cruised to a 14-3 victory over Westminster on Wednesday afternoon at Fishel Field, a convincing result in a tune-up game before a key conference doubleheader this weekend.

Seven different Terriers student-athletes recorded multiple hits in the game, giving Hiram its second-most base hits in a game this season (18, trails 22 at Capital on March 16). The team has scored at least eight runs in all three of its games at Fishel Field this season.

Leading the offense was Matthew Trimble and John Bender, who each hit a home run and combined for five hits and five RBI. Ethan Lyke tied team-highs with three hits and three RBI, while Hal Walker Jr., Tyler Fernandez and Evan Fairbanks also had multi-hit efforts.

Outside of the offense, it was also a dominant day for the pitching staff, which allowed just one extra-base hit. Jacob Koces started the contest and worked seven innings of two-run ball before Jack Conley and Landin Wescott kept the lead intact in the final two frames.

Despite the wide margin of victory, it was also a come-from-behind win for the Terriers, who trailed 2-0 in the second inning. Hiram then scored at least one run in each of the next six innings to take the double-digit advantage, highlighted by a six-run sixth inning that included two-run blasts by Trimble and Bender. Walker Jr. doubled in a pair of runs to cap off the inning and carve out a 13-2 lead.

The teams would trade runs in the seventh and eighth innings, which marked the only remaining offense in the game.

Hiram will host Wabash College for a conference doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday at Fishel Field in Hiram, Ohio.
