GREENVILLE, Pennsylvania – March 25, 2024 – Hiram erased a two-run deficit before its opposition rallied back in a 5-3 loss to Thiel on Monday afternoon at Tomcat Park.
The Terriers turned a 3-1 deficit into a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning, when
Chaisson Marrs singled,
Ethan Lyke singled and
Connor Bansek walked to load the bases. A fielding error brought home Marrs and a walk to
Tyler Fernandez plated another run to give the road team a chance in the critical moments.
Thiel answered with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning, which ultimately ended the comeback attempt and sealed the defeat.
Hiram fell behind on a three-run inning from the Tomcats in the first frame – which included two unearned runs – but starting pitcher
Jacob Koces settled in and finished with a quality start: 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K. The junior took a no-decision thanks to Hiram's eighth-inning rally.
The middle of the Terriers batting order did most of the damage, with Fernandez and
John Bender each having a two-hit day.
Hal Walker Jr. and
Matthew Trimble each had an RBI in the non-conference battle.
Sam Boyle rounded out the notable contributions from the pitching staff with a scoreless inning of relief.
Hiram will shoot for its 10
th win of the season on Thursday, when it hosts Chatham at 4 p.m. from Fishel Field in Hiram, Ohio.
