HIRAM, Ohio – March 28, 2024 – A four-homer day – which included a grand slam from Tyler Fernandez – wasn't enough for Hiram in a 19-14 loss on Thursday afternoon at Fishel Field, as the bats stayed hot but the opposition was up to the test in the non-conference affair.
The four home runs are tied for the team's third-most home runs in a single game in program history, trailing a seven-homer game against William Penn in 2001 and a five-homer game against Kenyon in 2003. The last time the program had at least four home runs in a single game was in 2004 against Minnesota-Morris.
Fernandez had two long balls on the day and finished with a career-high six RBI out of the seventh spot in the batting order. Chaisson Marrs hit his third career homer, while Evan Fairbanks hit his team-high fourth home run of the season.
Matthew Trimble and John Bender also had multi-hit efforts to join the hit parade in a game that saw Hiram outhit its opposition, 16-4. Hiram had five runs in the third inning and six runs in the seventh inning, but a nine-RBI performance from Chatham's Jake Bredl and seven unearned runs proved to be the difference.
A quick turnaround is in store for the Terriers, as they open conference play against Wittenberg on Friday for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. at Fishel Field.
