BEREA, Ohio – March 24, 2024 – The Hiram baseball team won both games in its doubleheader against Saint Vincent on Sunday afternoon at Fisher Field, as
Jack Conley pitched a complete game to start the day (12-1 win) and the offense put together a late rally to earn the team its ninth victory (6-3 win) of the year.
Although Hiram was the home team for both games, the non-conference matchup was held on the campus of Baldwin Wallace University, an all-turf field that wasn't impacted by the rainy/snowy conditions over the past week.
Game 1 Recap
Conley was in a groove throughout the first game, as he logged his second career complete game (also at Wilmington on March 19, 2023) while not allowing an extra-base hit. His final line provided the Terriers with a big boost after six days away from game action: 7 IP, 7 H, 1 R/ER, 2 BB, 5 K.
The Hiram offense came in many forms, as the team totaled 11 hits, five walks and four hit by pitches to constantly apply pressure against the opposition.
Matthew Trimble led the charge with a 3-for-3 day, which included two doubles and five RBI (tied career-high, also vs Bluffton on March 6, 2024).
Trimble had a pair of two-run doubles between the fourth and fifth innings, while
Chaisson Marrs (two),
Ethan Lyke,
Hal Walker Jr. and
Tyler Fernandez all had RBI base knocks throughout the offensive outburst.
Conley worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning to close out the 11-run victory.
Game 2 Recap
There was a different feel to the second game, with Saint Vincent scoring in each of the first two innings but Hiram keeping it within one run on a Walker Jr. RBI single.
Nicolas Chernitsky would settle in and near a quality start in his fifth career appearance: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K.
The Terriers made their moves in the second half of the contest, tying it at 2-2 on a
Ben Yoder RBI single in the fourth inning and taking the lead on a balk in the fifth inning. Saint Vincent added a run in the sixth inning, making it a 3-3 game heading into the home half of the sixth frame.
Connor Bansek delivered the decisive blow on an RBI double, with another run scoring on the play thanks to a throwing error. Trimble capped off his breakout day with an RBI single to give closer
Jacob Kocuba, who struck out three batters over 1.2 scoreless innings, all he needed to earn the win.
