Albano Sets Single-Game Program Record With 47 Assists; Hiram Comes Up Short At Geneva

Junior Setter Etches Name Atop Record Books

BEAVER FALLS, Pennsylvania - February 7, 2024 - Despite a record-setting performance, the second match of the season between Hiram and Geneva fell in favor of the home team.

After beating the Golden Tornadoes in four sets on January 19, the Terriers lost in four sets on Wednesday evening at Metheny Fieldhouse: 27-25, 19-25, 26-24, 25-20.

Kyle Martini and Jackson Deubner spearheaded the offense with 14 and 12 kills respectively, while Matthew Albano set the program record with 47 assists. The junior setter passed his previous best of 45 assists (vs Saint Vincent last season) and beat the single-game record of 46 assists by Andrew Diaz de Padilla (vs Mount Union in 2022).

Geneva did just enough in the key moments to pull out the victory, erasing Hiram set points in the first and third sets to pull ahead in the match, 2-1. The team then bounced back from a 4-0 deficit in the fourth set and closed out the match on a 7-1 run.

For the Terriers, the loss snapped their streak of seven straight matches with at least two sets won. The team still hasn't been swept in a match since its season opener at Mount Union.

Hiram won the second set behind 10 assists from Albano, four of which led to kills by Deubner. Albano also had 13 assists in the first set, 15 in the third set and nine in the fourth set to finish off a huge effort that ended with his name atop the record books.

A great opportunity to get back in the win column presents itself on Saturday; the Terriers will host another Hiram Tri-Match, which also features Arcadia and Olivet. There will be three matches involving the teams beginning at 8:30 a.m. inside Price Gymnasium.
