Terriers Keep It Rolling With 3-0 Win Over Thiel

Hiram Starts Season With 2-0-0 Record

GREENVILLE, Pennsylvania - September 3, 2023 - The first week of the 2023-24 academic year has proven to be a good one for the Hiram men's soccer program; the team improved to 2-0-0 with a 3-0 victory over Thiel on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium at Stoeber Field. It marked Hiram's most goals in a game since it scored 3 goals against Allegheny on October 19, 2021.

Seniors Keagan Le'Roux and Antonio Vitale headline the production with a goal apiece, while Tyler Jurgensen had his first career shutout in his first start at goalkeeper. The defensive unit – spearheaded by Jeremy Sgro and Travis Shrout – also contributed to the team's second shutout of the 2023 campaign.

Hiram held the early edge, as it took the first four shots of the game and applied consistent pressure to the Tomcat defense. Le'Roux and Jimmy Zeilmann each had two shots during that span, although the match remained scoreless.

Thiel responded with three shots of its own, but Tyler Jurgensen – who was making his collegiate debut – saved two of the shots, while the other was off-target. For the game, Jurgensen had 6 saves.

Le'Roux broke the scoring barrier with his second goal in as many games, sinking a shot through the center of the net to give Hiram another first-half lead. The rest of the half was dominated by defense, keeping the score at 1-0 heading into the intermission.

Hiram sustained its form in the second half, as the offense had the first five shots of the half, the last of which was a free-kick goal by Vitale. It marked Vitale's first goal since the 2019 season.

The depth of the Terriers was on full display the rest of the way, as the team played 24 different student-athletes in the victorious effort. Freshman Colin Casey capped off the dominant performance with his first career goal in the 74th minute.

They program improved to 2-0-0 in a single season for the first time since 2019.

Next up, Hiram will head to Washington, PA on Wednesday to take on Washington & Jefferson at 7:30 p.m. from Alexandre Stadium.
