HIRAM, Ohio - September 1, 2023 - The Hiram men's soccer team did a little bit of everything in its season-opener against Pitt-Greensburg, dominating on both sides of the ball as part of a 2-0 victory at Henry Field on Friday afternoon.
Keagan Le'Roux and Jayden Julian scored the team's two goals, while Sean Rubin made four saves and the rest of the Terriers defense proved to be too much to handle in an all-around effort.
"I think it was huge," head coach Joe Chmura said after the game. "A lot of new guys, a lot of young players. It's good to have that momentum and a lot of confidence to build on."
The Terriers were aggressive early, ripping off four shots, the last of which was a header through the net by Le'Roux. The defense would do the damage for the remainder of the half, with Rubin getting the first two saves of his collegiate career and the defense limiting the opposition to just four shots for the first 45 minutes.
More of the same dominance ensued in the second half, with Pitt-Greensburg coming up short on all five of its shots. Julian, who was also making his collegiate debut, capped the day off with a goal in the final minute to secure the team's first multi-goal victory since September 4, 2021 at Washington & Jefferson.
"It was good to see a couple different guys step up and contribute," Chmura said.
Hiram will now set its sights on Thiel; kickoff is at 4 p.m. on Sunday from Alumni Stadium in Greenville, Pennsylvania.
