Hiram, Geneva Have Defensive Battle On Saturday

Terriers Lose At Home For First Time This Season

HIRAM, Ohio - September 16, 2023 - The Hiram defense played a full 90 minutes on Saturday, holding Geneva to just 5 shots on goal despite a 2-0 loss at Henry Field.

Sean Rubin collected three saves, while Travis Shrout, Jeremy Sgro, Simon Schonfeld and Vincent Rienzi played well together on the defensive end. Offensively, Matt Callan spearheaded Hiram with all three of its shots on goal.

The hard-fought defeat ends Hiram's three-game unbeaten streak at Henry Field; the Terriers had outscored opponents, 6-1, in their first three home games of the year.

It was a lively first 15 minutes of the game, with the Golden Tornadoes unable to capitalize on three corner kicks and Hiram firing off four shots that just missed the mark. Rubin earned all three of his saves in a 14-minute span, keeping the score at 0-0 through 30 minutes.

Geneva cracked the scoring column first on a George Cottenden goal in the 37th minute, a header that was strategically placed toward the corner of the net. Hiram would hold firm the rest of the way to keep the deficit at one at the intermission.

There was a similar style to the second half, with each team defending well and limiting scoring opportunities. Geneva recorded its second goal in the 65th minute to gain some breathing room and eventually enough production to earn the non-conference win.

Hiram will look to get back to its winning ways when it travels to Defiance, Ohio and takes on Defiance on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
