DEFIANCE, Ohio - September 19, 2023 - A high-powered Hiram offense battled its way back into a tight match against Defiance before ultimately losing, 4-2, at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field.
It was a game for the newcomers on Tuesday, as freshmen Chance McGinnis and Simon Schonfeld each scored the first goals of their collegiate careers. Impressively, the memorable scores came within a minute of each other: McGinnis in the 28th minute and Schonfeld in the 29th minute.
McGinnis also assisted on the second of the two goals, making him the first Hiram player this season to have a goal and an assist in a single game. Antonio Vitale was responsible for the first assist, setting up his first-year teammate well and earning the second assist of his career.
The offensive surge turned a 2-0 deficit into a 2-2 tie, a shift in momentum that would carry its way to the intermission between the two teams.
The Yellow Jackets would find their form over the final 45 minutes, scoring in the 58th and 59th minutes to regain a two-goal advantage. Riley Hensley scored both goals during that span and finished with three goals for the entire game.
Despite the loss, Hiram had more shots (16-14) and shots on goal (9-7) than its opposition. The team scored multiple goals in a game for the fifth time this season, and now enters the final two games of its non-conference schedule with a chance to add to that production.
The Terriers return to action on Friday, when they play host to the Purple Raiders of Mount Union at 7 p.m. from Henry Field in Hiram, Ohio.
