WAYNESBURG, Pennsylvania - September 11, 2023 - The Terriers fell short to Waynesburg on Monday evening, 2-0, at John F. Wiley Stadium.
It was a tightly contested battle that saw Hiram hold the Yellow Jackets scoreless in the first half and tally nearly as many shots on goal as its opposition for the game (7-6). Ten different Terriers players recorded at least one shot attempt, while goalkeeper Tyler Jurgensen was strong in his third career start.
The game snapped Hiram's streak of four straight games with multiple goals, which was its longest such streak since October 2016.
Hiram was assertive in the early stages, firing off three shots and a corner kick in the first 15 minutes alone. Goalkeeper Michael Francus had two saves during that span, keeping it a scoreless contest.
The Terriers defense would shine the rest of the first half, as they fended off four shot attempts. The offense had a pair of corner kicks in the closing minutes, but it remained 0-0 heading into the intermission.
The Yellow Jackets would break through in the 55th and 79th minute, with Samuel Hawkins and Zachary Johnson scoring a pair of unassisted goals. Hiram's Blake Kubasak had a late shot on goal, but a Waynesburg save would be enough to hold on for the victory.
Hiram will aim for a perfect 3-0 home record when it faces Chatham on Thursday at 7 p.m. from Henry Field in Hiram, Ohio.
