Comeback Bid Comes Up Short For Terriers Softball

Hiram Loses Both Games Of Doubleheader At Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio - April 15, 2023 - The Hiram softball team lost both of its games at Denison on Saturday, falling 8-3 in Game 1 and 8-7 in Game 2.

The Terriers move to 13-11 overall this season, with 8 conference games still remaining on the regular-season schedule.

Next up is a doubleheader against Oberlin on Tuesday beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Herndon Field.

Game 1 Recap

Hiram erased a 1-0 deficit with 2 runs in the second inning; Giselle Bahena and Fayth Kawamura made an impact with a pair of RBI singles to give their team the early edge. Bahena finished the game reaching base safely in 3 of her 4 plate appearances, with the other PA being a sacrifice bunt that brought in Abriana Schwartz from third base.

Denison would hang a pair of crooked numbers in the second (3 runs) and fifth innings (3 runs) to eventually pull ahead, 8-3. Schwartz had 2 hits out of the eighth spot in the lineup, but the Big Red ended Game 1 victorious.

Game 2 Recap

Both offenses were clicking in Game 2, with the two teams combining for 15 runs on 26 hits. All 9 hitters in the Hiram starting lineup recorded a base hit, four of whom had multiple hits (Kawamura, Schwartz, Larissa Baeza and Danielle Robles).

The Terriers scored at least one run in each of the last five innings of the game; including 2 runs on a home run by Darian Kanno in the fifth inning. For Kanno, it was her 2nd home run of the season and the 4th of her young career.

Denison made its move in the fourth inning, scoring 7 runs on 6 hits to regain an 8-3 lead. Hiram continued to peck away at the deficit before Sydney Silverstein shut it down for the save.
