FORT MYERS, Florida - March 7, 2023 - Hiram suffered its first loss of the season to Rockford, 9-3, on Tuesday morning at Terry Park Field 4.Â
Michael Corsillo notched 3 hits and the bullpen had 5 different arms record a scoreless outing, but Rockford's 9 runs on 16 hits was the difference.
It marks the team's first defeat since May 5, 2022 against Ohio Wesleyan; the Terriers had won 6 straight games dating back to last season.
The Regents took a 6-0 lead through the first two innings, tallying 7 hits – including 5 straight hits in the second inning – during that span. Reliever Cooper Smith was able to get the team out of trouble and retire the final two hitters in the second.
Hiram scored its first run in the third inning thanks to a wild pitch that scored Corsillo from third base. The senior had reached on a single and finished the day with his first 3-hit performance since he had 4 hits against Oberlin on May 2, 2021.
The Terriers bullpen would hold Rockford to 2 runs over the final 5 innings, with Noah Brown, Kaden Anderson, Vincent Pernotto, Aidan DeBolt and Alexander Zane Brown all striking out at least 1 hitter and allowing 0 runs.
The rest of the Hiram offense came on a RBI double by John Bender in the 6th inning and a wild pitch that scored Ben Gregg.
A quick turnaround is in store for the Terriers, as they return to action on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Baruch beginning at 9 a.m. The games will be played on Terry Park Field 2 in Fort Myers, Florida.
