Walk-Off Win Highlights Doubleheader Sweep Of Baruch

Hiram Improves To 5-1 With 2 Wins On Wednesday

FORT MYERS, Florida - March 8, 2023 - The Terriers kept it rolling in Fort Myers on Wednesday, winning both games of a doubleheader against Baruch, 4-3 and 12-4, under the scorching sun at Terry Park Field.

The first of the two victories came in walk-off fashion, with senior Kyle Adams skying an RBI double to the left-center field gap to win it in the seventh inning. Game 2 saw the team score all 12 of its runs in the first three innings behind an impressive performance on the mound from Jacob Koces.

Hiram is now 5-1 this season and has clinched a winning record at the end of its 8-game road trip in Florida.

Game 1 Recap

The Terriers wasted no time in the early stages of the game, tallying 3 runs in the first 2 innings to take a 3-1 lead. Hal Walker Jr. had an opposite-field RBI single and Adams laced a sacrifice fly to right field to score Chaisson Marrs.

Aidan Stephens had the strikeout ball working in his first start of the year, punching out 4 batters over 3 2/3 quality innings. Landin Wescott followed up Stephens out of the bullpen, retiring all 7 batters he faced, including 6 straight strikeouts to finish his 2nd career outing.

Baruch would tie the game in the top of the 7th inning, but Jacob Kocuba worked out of trouble and kept the score intact after giving up an unearned run. For the game, Kocuba and Wescott combined for 3 1/3 IP with 0 ER and 7 K.

"I thought they both threw the ball well," head coach Phil Brua said. "We think those guys are going to be one of the better back-ends of the bullpen."

The late-game heroics returned for Hiram in the seventh; Marrs (walk) and Michael Corsillo (single) both reached base with 1 out to set the stage for Adams, who ripped a fly ball the other way well over the heads of the opposition.

"It was great for Kyle," Brua said. "He came up big when we needed it."

Marrs would come around to score and the Terriers picked up their second walk-off win of the season. Walker Jr. won Game 2 against Pitt Bradford earlier this week on a walk-off RBI double.

Game 2 Recap

There was a lot more breathing room in Game 2, as the Terriers showed discipline at the plate and worked 9 walks in the first three innings alone. The second inning featured timely hitting, too, with 5 different players recording an RBI knock: Cody Wilson (two singles), Walker Jr. (single), Evan Fairbanks (double), Jimmy Rockow (single) and Corsillo (sac fly).

Alec Bennett added an RBI single in the third inning – his first collegiate hit in his first collegiate start – to carve out a 12-0 lead for the Terriers. For the game, Hiram finished with 12 runs, 9 hits, 9 walks and 3 stolen bases.

The offensive explosion was matched by a winning pitching line from Koces, who made his 1st career start in his second season with the program: 5 IP, 7 H, 0 R/ER, 1 BB, 3 K. Daniel Quintero Jr. was dominant, too, striking out 3 of the 4 batters he faced in a clean sixth inning of work.

Baruch scored 4 runs in the seventh, but Kaden Anderson shut it all down and secured Hiram's 5th win.

Hiram will resume play on Thursday at 3 p.m. against Saint John's; live stats for the game will be provided here.
