HIRAM, Ohio - March 30, 2023 - Hiram scored 18 runs – its most in a game since 2021 – and tied a season-high with 17 hits in an 18-7 win over Capital on Thursday afternoon at Fishel Field.
The top of the Terriers batting order once again delivered, with Chaisson Marrs, Connor Bansek and Hal Walker Jr. combining for 7 hits, 6 RBI and 8 runs scored. Marrs also hit the team's first home run of the season, a 3-run shot over the left-center-field wall.
Jacob Koces spearheaded the pitching staff with his 2nd victory of the season; the sophomore struck out 7 hitters over 5 innings of 2-run ball (1 earned run allowed). Kaden Anderson escaped trouble in the sixth inning and Robert James closed it out with 2 strong innings of relief.
It marks Hiram's third consecutive victory, tied for the team's longest win streak of the season. Head coach Phil Brua and company also won their first three games of the 2023 campaign.
Capital led 2-1 early on before the Terriers erupted for 9 runs on 7 hits in the third inning. Five different players recorded an RBI knock in the inning: Michael Corsillo, Bansek, Walker Jr., Tanner Allison and Mike Midea.
Koces was able to use that 8-run lead to his advantage on the mound, coasting through the remainder of his outing and finishing with a final line of 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K. The right-hander is now 2-0 on the young season.
The Terriers kept their foot on the gas pedal with another 8 runs in the sixth inning or later. Fairbanks started it with a 2-run single before Marrs lifted his 2nd career home run and Carter Smith added insurance with a 2-run single. Smith was one of five Hiram players to have multiple RBI on the day.
Hiram has averaged 12 runs per game over its three-game win streak, with the starting pitcher in each of those three games earning the victory.
The beginning of NCAC competition will arrive on Saturday, when the Terriers travel to Springfield, Ohio to face Wittenberg beginning at 12 p.m.
