SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - April 2, 2023 - The Terriers lost twice at Wittenberg on Sunday, 11-1 and 18-3.
Hiram got a solid start from Jack Conley in Game 1 and a multi-hit performance from Mike Midea in Game 2.
Wittenberg improved its home record to 9-1 and now features a 13-6 overall record.
Hiram will return to action with another pair of conference games on Tuesday; Hiram will host Oberlin beginning at 12 p.m.
Game 1 Recap
It was a competitive start in Game 1, with Conley allowing 0 earned runs through 4 innings (1 unearned) and Hal Walker Jr. singling in a run. The score was even at 1-1.
Conley battled through some traffic on the base paths in the middle innings and nearly finished with a quality start: 5.2 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K. The sophomore induced 8 groundouts and 7 flyouts on the day.
The Tigers would score 10 of their 11 runs in the fifth inning or later to earn the win; Chase Whisner led the way with a 4-4 day at the plate, which included 3 doubles. For Hiram, Landin Wescott allowed 0 earned runs out of the bullpen in his seventh outing of the year.
Game 2 Recap
Wittenberg picked up right where it left off in Game 1, scoring 12 runs in the first two innings of Game 2. Seven different Tigers hitters had a multi-hit game, including Parker Gryskevic, who went 4-4 with 5 RBI.
Hiram was able to play well in the late innings, tying Wittenberg, 3-3, after the 5th inning. Jordan Mallernee had an RBI groundout, Kobe Hunter ripped an RBI single and Alec Bennett had an RBI single to help finish the game on a positive note.
Wittenberg's early production proved to be too much in the loss. The Tigers also got 5 scoreless innings from their starting pitcher.
