COLUMBUS, Ohio - March 27, 2023 - Hiram recorded 16 hits and got another quality start from its starting rotation in a 7-2 win over Capital on Monday afternoon.
Evan Fairbanks tied a career-high with 4 hits, while Hal Walker Jr. and Michael Corsillo each added 3 hits. Chaisson Marrs was the catalyst atop the batting order, reaching base safely in 5 of his 6 plate appearances.
Stephen Javorek was dominant in his fourth start of the season, allowing just 2 hits over 7 innings of work. Matthew Kardos, Austin Smith and Jacob Kocuba followed by posting clean outings out of the 'pen.
The Terriers are now 8-6 on the season with their home opener now three days away.
It was a tightly contested first five innings; Hiram broke the scoring barrier on a third-inning single by Connor Bansek before Capital took the lead with a 2-run fifth inning. Javorek retired the first 13 hitters he faced and eventually finished with a final line of 7 IP, 2 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 6 K.
Marrs singled and Kyle Adams scored on a fielding error in right field to level the score at 2-2 in the sixth frame. One inning later, Fairbanks brought home Walker Jr. on an opposite-field single to regain a 3-2 lead.
The middle of the order did the rest of the damage: Walker Jr. ripped a 2-run double down the right-field line and Fairbanks had a 2-run single up the middle to give the Hiram bullpen all it needed to secure the victory.
The top-4 hitters in the Terriers lineup batted a combined .625 (10-16) on the day, with 5 runs scored and 6 RBI. For Corsillo, his 3-hit effort matched a season-high.
Hiram and Capital will both head northeast and meet again on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Fishel Field.
