CRESSON, Pennsylvania - March 18, 2023 - Hiram fought through a lengthy first set before settling in and cruising to a conference victory over Mount Aloysius on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania: 27-25, 25-15, 25-23.
The win gives the Terriers a 4-3 record in AMCC play and a regular-season sweep over the Mounties. Hiram had 13+ kills in each of the three sets.
Cullen Sivak had 12 kills to lead the team, while Kyle Martini (10) and Jackson Deubner (9) trailed closely behind. The team's defense was also dominant throughout the day, with Garrett Scheidegger (4), Matthew Albano (4) and Jack Meinert (4) all having solid performances in that department. Deubner also had 7 digs, which marked his 6th game of the season with at least 7 digs.
Mount Aloysius held the lead for most of the first set; the Mounties led 7-2 early and eventually sustained that advantage through a 23-21 score. Hiram found its groove at that point, rattling off 3 straight points to pull ahead, 24-23.
The final moments of the first set had Hiram saving a set point while trailing 25-24. Scheidegger then recorded a block and a kill on the next two points to give the Terriers the first set, 27-25.
Hiram had much more control of the second set, putting together three different rallies of 3, 4 and 5 unanswered points. Sivak had 6 of his 12 kills in the set to secure his team a 2-set advantage.
The Terriers would lead 12-7 in the third set before the Mounties fought back and brought the margin to 2 points (20-18). Hiram would hold on, though, with Scheidegger recording another kill on set point to clinch the victory.
Next up will be a home matchup against Penn State Altoona on Wednesday at 7 p.m. inside Price Gymnasium.
