BETHANY, West Virginia - March 1, 2023 - The Hiram men's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season, 5-3 over Bethany, behind a multi-goal performance from Trevor Flugum and a dominant defensive effort.
The 3 goals allowed was the team's best since 2019 (allowed 2 goals at Bethany on March 13, 2019). Goalkeeper Aidan Griffin earned his first career win with 12 saves in the non-conference battle.
It also marks the Terriers first win under head coach Brian Welch and fourth win against Bethany in program history (all-time series is tied, 4-4).
For Flugum, it was his 2nd straight game with 2 goals to give him a team-high 5 goals this season. Ambrose Colliluori is tied for that team lead, as he scored his 5th goal of the season. Other goal scorers included Brett Johnson and Aaron Gardner.
Both offenses started slow in the first quarter, with Johnson opening the scoring with his first goal of the season before the Bison responded with a goal just a few minutes later. Neither team would score for the remainder of the period.
Hiram made its mark in the second quarter, with Gardner, Colliluori and Flugum scoring 3 unanswered goals to open a 4-1 lead, the team's largest in a game this season. Bethany would again respond, though, with 2 goals in the final 3:30 of the half to cut the Terriers lead to 1.
Griffin and the Hiram defense wouldn't allow a goal for the entirety of the second half, with the team finishing with 11 caused turnovers and 40 ground balls. Flugum capped off the win with a goal on a man-up opportunity in the closing moments of the third period.
The Terriers will look to even their record on Saturday at Thiel; the non-conference matchup begins at 12 p.m. in Greenville, Pennsylvania.
