Hiram Loses To Geneva In Tight Conference Clash

Terriers Keep Pace With Golden Tornadoes

GENEVA, Pennsylvania - February 22, 2023 - Hiram kept within striking distance, but Geneva did just enough to hang on in a straight set loss on Wednesday evening at Metheny Fieldhouse: 21-25, 22-25, 19-25.

The Terriers were playing their first game in over a week and gave the Golden Tornadoes all they could handle, keeping the margin within 6-or-fewer points for the entirety of the evening. Hiram was effective in limiting momentum, with Geneva's most consecutive points in the match being just 4.

The differences in the game were slim: Geneva edged past Hiram in points (46 to 41), kills (37 to 35) and digs (43 to 36).

The Golden Tornadoes are now 4-0 in AMCC play and remain 1 of 2 teams with an unbeaten conference record (Penn State Behrend, 6-0).  The Terriers fall to 3-2 against AMCC teams, which ranks 5th out of 10 programs.

Garrett Scheidegger led the way with a career-high 13 kills, while Kyle Martini posted a balanced effort with 10 kills and 6 digs. Connor Tilton's 7 kills were tied for his 2nd-most in a career game, too.

Hiram trailed 5-2 in each of the three sets, but those early deficits would all either be erased or cut to 1 point. The resilience of the team was particularly evident in the third set, when the Terriers trimmed a 15-10 deficit to 16-15. Four different Terriers players recorded a kill during that span: Martini, Brian Friedt, Jarod Leynes and Scheidegger.

Geneva would finish the match by winning 6 of the final 8 points to keep their unbeaten conference record intact. Byron Spear finished with a game-high 15 kills.

Hiram will return to AMCC competition on Saturday against Thiel at 1 p.m. in Greenville, Pennsylvania.
