GRANVILLE, Ohio - February 10, 2023 - The Hiram men's and women's swimming teams finished up day 3 of the NCAC Championships at Denison in successful fashion, with both teams having strong results and setting themselves up for a big final day on Saturday.
As things currently stand, the men's team is in 8th place with 255.5 points and the women's team is in 7th place with 250 points.
"We always talk about building into the meet, moving through the meet and getting better every day," head coach Michael Barber said. "Really excited for tomorrow and seeing what our freshmen can do. We're a young team."
The last day of the event will begin with the preliminary races at 9:30 a.m. followed by the final races at 6 p.m. Saturday gives the Terriers a chance to climb the conference leaderboard and ride some momentum heading into the offseason.
"We're used to it now," Barber said of the team's ability to adjust to a conference championship atmosphere. "Tomorrow they're going to show what they've learned."
Men's Recap
Owen Pastorius got the men started with a 4:30.32 clip in the 400-yard IM, which ranked 17th out of 25 swimmers in the conference. Landon Hughes (4:35.36) and Drew Hostetler (5:10.36) also posted solid times in the same event.
Gabe Farthing made his presence felt in the 100-yard butterfly, recording a time of 59.24. Jon Hybil followed suit in the 100-yard breaststroke, racing to a time of 1:01.64 and tying for 17th place out of 28. Jacob Carleton (1:07.85) also was in the event and carved out a big finish.
Nathan Ratynski (59.65) and Adam Ellis (59.69) were neck-and-neck in the final individual race for the men's team, placing 24th and 25th respectively in the 100-yard backstroke.
Ellis, Carleton, Farthing and Ratynski also teamed together in the 400-yard medley relay (3:56.81) to finish Day 3 for the team.
Women's Recap
The women had 3 different swimmers competing in the 400-yard IM, with Moraine Jackson (5:28.41), Grace Basham (6:11.57) and Madelyn Sagle all making an impact. The three athletes also swam the same race as part of the preliminary races in the morning.
Elena Rinaldi had a big day in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 1:04.91, which was good for 22nd place. She earned her team 6 points with the effort.
Carrie Robinson had a 2:41.87 time in the 200-yard freestyle, while Lilly MacDonald went 1:15.06 and Natalie Brown went 1:20.82 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Adrianna Klepper wrapped up the individual events in the 100-yard backstroke (1:15.05).
The 400-yard medley relay team of Jackson, MacDonald, Rinaldi and Klepper finished the evening with a 4:35.84 mark in front of a roaring NCAC crowd.
