CRAWFORDSVILLE, Indiana – October 7, 2023 – Hiram played a strong first half and limited the damage in the second half as part of a competitive 2-0 loss to Wabash on Saturday afternoon at Mud Hollow Stadium.
Neither team would score in the first 45 minutes, with the Terriers defense allowing just six shot attempts and
Sean Rubin notching four saves during that span. The defense, which is headed by seniors
Jeremy Sgro and
Travis Shrout, also fended off four corner kicks to give Hiram momentum heading into the intermission.
Jimmy Zeilmann was responsible for one of Hiram's best scoring chances in the first half, missing a shot to the right of the net in the 27
th minute. The North Royalton, Ohio now leads all freshman on the team with 15 shot attempts this season.
The Little Giants were able to break through early in the second half thanks to goals in the 53
rd and 56
th minutes. The team had two close shots in the minutes leading up to the goals before taking the lead.
Hiram continued to apply pressure defensively for the remainder of the game, keeping Wabash to just four shots following the two goals. The final minutes also provided a chance for the depth of the roster to shine through, with 20 student-athletes logging at least one minute of playing time in the match.
The Terriers will look to pick up their first conference win when they host Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Henry Field in Hiram, Ohio.
