HIRAM, Ohio – October 10, 2023 – The Hiram men's soccer team put forth a hard-fought effort in a 4-1 loss against Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday evening at Henry Field.
The Terriers scored their first goal of the conference season, as
Jeremy Sgro knocked in a penalty kick through the right side of the net to cap off the scoring in the game.
It marks a strong finish against a Battling Bishops team that has now won six of its last seven games, with the loss coming against the No. 25 team in the nation (Kenyon).
Hiram was solid on both sides of the field over the first 35 minutes, showing aggressiveness on the defensive end and getting offensive opportunities as well.
Matt Callan missed to the left in the 21
st minute and
Simon Schonfeld did the same in the 35
th minute.
Goalkeeper
Sean Rubin had three saves during that span to keep the score deadlocked at 0-0. The Terriers defense faced nine shots and fended off all of them to keep it close early on.
The Battling Bishops broke through with a pair of goals in the 37
th and 38
th minutes to take a two-goal lead, which held heading into the intermission.
Ohio Wesleyan kept it going with goals in the 49
th and 58
th minutes to open the second half before Hiram found its footing.
Travis Shrout and
Bobby Lucey both had shot attempts shortly after the two goals, with
Jimmy Zeilmann also getting an opportunity later in the half on a shot that missed right.
Sgro would capitalize on the penalty kick opportunity to cut the margin to three. It was the first penalty kick goal of Sgro's career at Hiram College.
The Terriers will next take on the Owls of Kenyon College, who rank 25
th in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III National Poll. Action from Mavec Field in Gambier, Ohio will start at 1 p.m.
