HIRAM, Ohio – October 4, 2023 – The Hiram women's volleyball team dominated in all facets of the game on Wednesday, sweeping Washington & Jefferson inside Price Gymnasium: 25-13, 25-12, 25-12.
The victory marked the team's first at home this season, and it came on the heels of two well-played conference matches against Wooster (3-0 win) and Denison (3-2 loss).
"So overdue, it felt good," head coach
Brittany Dye said after the win. "We've put in a lot of work. We've had a lot of close losses, so I feel like it's finally paid off."
The Terriers have featured a balanced attack all season, with six different student-athletes entering play with at least 40 kills. On Wednesday,
Cate Maguire (14),
Andrya Hanmore (10),
Emily Richardson (10) and
Claire Brunner (9) spearheaded the offense and added to their kill totals this year.
"I thought our offense was really balanced," Dye said. "Cate came alive, 14 kills. Richardson with 10, Andrya with 10, Claire with 9. That's a really balanced offense."
The team's 48 kills in the match were primarily set up by
Brooke Fishback (24 assists) and
Erin Burke (12 assists).
Brooke Norris and Brunner also added 17 digs each, while Hiram combined for 7 blocks to complete the strong performance.
"I thought everyone did their job," Dye said. "Our setters did a good job finding everyone, so it was good."
Hiram never trailed by more than one point for the entirety of the match, establishing itself offensively in the early stages of every set. Momentum was key, with the Terriers rattling off 10 straight points in the first set (Brunner serving), four straight points in the second set (three times) and nine straight points to end the match in the third set (Norris serving).
The Terriers finished the evening with season-highs in attack percentage (.383) and kills (48). Their 41 assists were also the most in any three-set match this season.
A chance to have a winning record in conference play presents itself for Hiram on Saturday, as it travels to Greencastle, Indiana for a match with DePauw at 1 p.m. inside Neal Fieldhouse.
"We're really looking to avenge our last conference loss against Denison," Dye said. "We're 1-1 right now. Hopefully after a good weekend we'll come back 2-1."
