SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – January 21, 2023 – A big second-half comeback wasn't enough for Hiram in an 85-78 overtime loss to Wittenberg on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Terriers trailed by 9 points at halftime before going on a 9-0 run and taking a 58-55 lead with under six minutes to play in regulation. Hiram held its opposition scoreless for over 5 minutes of game time during that run (10:48 to 5:28 in second half).
Â
Wittenberg scored 8 minutes in the final minute of the second half to event the score at 71-71 and send Hiram to its 3
rd overtime game of the season, all of which have come in conference play.
Â
The Tigers would score 12 of their 14 overtime points from the free-throw line to pull ahead and even the season series between the two teams at one game apiece. Hiram beat Wittenberg on Dec. 3, 80-70.
Â
Brodgie Gordon played a game-high 40 minutes, scoring 24 points on 10-19 shooting from the field and 3-6 shooting from beyond the perimeter.
Trent Jakacki (16 points, 6-10 FG),
Dushawn Hill (13, 5-10) and
Ivan Yang (13, 5-8) also contributed to the efficient effort on offense.
Â
For Gordon, the 24-point performance marks his fifth 20-point game of the season and his eighth game with a FG pct over 50%. It was also his second game of the season with at least 10 field goals, joining the 12-FG game he had in the season opener against Geneva on Nov. 9.
Â
Jakacki has now scored in double-figures in 15 of his 18 games with the Hiram program.
Â
The Terriers will next take on Kenyon at 8 p.m. on Wednesday in Gambier, Ohio.
