Saturday's Football Game at Oberlin Will be the 1,000th in Hiram College History

Hiram, OH -- Sept. 27, 2022  --  This Saturday, September 27, 2022, the Hiram College football team will play at Oberlin in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at 1PM.  The contest will mark the 1,000th football game in the school's long history.  

Some interesting notes and highlights follow:
 
  • Hiram's first game was played on October 14, 1892, against the Farmington Athletic Club. Hiram won 18-6
  • Starting in 1892 to present day 2022, Hiram is currently in its 124th season of football. The school did not field a team in 1899 or 1900; the 1917 season was canceled due to WWI; the 1943, 1944, and 1945 seasons were canceled due to WWII; and the 2020 season was canceled due to the Covid pandemic.
  • During the late 1890's and early 1900's, Hiram's schedule included a total of 18 non-college games against local Athletic Clubs from nearby towns in Northeast Ohio.
  • Hiram has played Mt. Union more than any other opponent, with 66 games against the Purple Raiders going all the way back to 1894. They last played each other during the 1999 season.
  • Hiram's opponent this Saturday, Oberlin College, ranks 2nd, having played the Terriers 63 times since their first contest in 1895.
  • Hiram was a member of the Ohio Athletic Conference from 1952 to 1970, and again from 1990 to 1999. From 1972 to 1988 they were in the Presidents Athletic Conference, and from 2000 to present day 2022 they have competed as a member of the North Coast Athletic Conference.
  • Current Head Coach, Jack Mrozinski, is the 33rd Head Coach in the program's history.
  • The winningest coach in Hiram history is Joe Malmisur, who logged 51 wins and coached the team to the PAC Championship in 1982.
  • The 2nd winningest coach is Don Charlton, who accounted for 34 wins, and led the Terriers to the NCAA Division III National Playoffs with an 8-1 regular season record in 1987.
  • Steve Belichick, father of longtime NFL Head Coach Bill Belichick, coached the Hiram football team from 1946-1948.
  •  Hiram has produced 15 All-Americans. The first was Bill Proverbs in 1955, and the most recent was Kyle Burchett in 2016.
  • Hiram has had 87 1st Team All-Conference selections over the years.
