HIRAM, Ohio – April 6, 2022 – Hiram baseball split a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader at Wooster on Wednesday afternoon. The Terriers lost game one by a score of 10-0 in seven innings and rallied to win game two, 9-4.
The game two victory is the largest margin of victory against Wooster since 2004.
GAME 1: Wooster 10, Hiram 0 (7 innings)
Wooster quickly scored four runs in the first frame starting the game with a four-run lead. The Fighting Scots put together back-to-back home runs from Ben Hines and Ben Gbur followed by another RBI single taking a 7-0 lead after two innings.
Gbur reached on a fielder's choice scoring another run in the third. No scoring was done in the middle portion of game one, with neither team crossing the plate.
Curtis Caithaml singled followed by
Kyle Workman drawing a walk in the seventh inning. Hiram was unable to plate any runs, however, with no one else reaching base.
Hines homered again in the seventh leading to the 10-0 run-rule win in the seventh inning.
Caithaml had a single and a walk. Workman,
Devin Houdeshell and
Chaisson Marrs all had walks in game one.
Robert James took the loss falling to 0-2 on the year pitching 2.0 innings with three strikeouts. In relief,
Sam Boyle pitched 4.0 innings allowing just one earned run and collecting two strikeouts.
Declan Ange pitched the final inning with one hit and one strikeout.
GAME 2: Hiram 9, Wooster 4
In the top of the first inning, Tyler Chumita hit an RBI sacrifice fly scoring Ben Gbur as the Fighting Scots played from in front.
Kyle Workman answered in the bottom half of the inning with his third home run of the season on a solo shot.
Connor Bansek followed that up with an RBI single scoring Caithaml with the Terriers taking the lead at 2-1.
Workman connected on his second homer of the game in the third inning, this time a two-run shot scoring
Kyle Adams.
Kobe Hunter scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Bansek ending the inning with Hiram up 5-1.
The scoring kept coming for the Terriers again crossing the plate in the fourth inning. After stealing third base, Marrs scored on a throwing error, followed by Adams scoring the same way one at-bat later. Finishing out the fourth inning was a
Cody Wilson RBI single that scored Workman putting the score at 8-1.
Jack Henderson got Wooster back in the scoring column with a two-run home run in the sixth inning making the score 8-3.
Jacob Kocuba relieved starting pitcher
Stephen Javorek in the seventh inning. After a scoreless seventh, Wooster scored one run in the eighth on an RBI groundout.
Adams tallied on a run in the bottom of the eighth scoring
Michael Corsillo on an RBI sacrifice fly locking down the final score of 9-4.
Workman finished game two with four hits, three runs and three RBI. Wilson put up two hits with an RBI with Bansek getting two RBI and a hit.
Caithaml, Marrs, Adams and
Aidan Jantz all picked up hits in the win as well. Workman now has a team-leading four home runs.
Javroek notches his third win of the season improving to 3-2. The right-handed pitcher pitched six innings allowing two earned runs with three strikeouts.
Jacob Kocuba earned his third save of the season in three innings of relief also posting three strikeouts. Kocuba is now Hiram baseball's all-time saves leader with six.
Hiram improves to 8-10 on the season with their first NCAC win with the team now 1-3 in conference play.
Hiram has a quick turnaround hosting Muskingum on Thursday, April 7 with first pitch at 2 p.m. at Fishel Field at Proverbs Park.
