HIRAM, Ohio - April 5, 2022 – After finishing the regular season on a six-game win streak, Hiram men's volleyball enters the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Tournament as the No. 3 seed.
The Terriers will face Medaille on Tuesday, April 5 at 7:00 p.m. inside Price Gymnasium in the AMCC Championship Tournament Quarterfinal.
Hiram finished the regular season with a 19-11 record and a 12-4 record in conference play.
Last season, Hiram won the AMCC Tournament, clinching their first-ever conference championship in a five-set thriller over Penn State Behrend inside Price Gymnasium.
This season, the Terriers opened AMCC play with three-straight wins, including a 3-1 road win at No. 2-seeded Geneva.
At about the midway point of conference play, Hiram again beat Geneva, followed by a sweep of Mount Aloysius. The Terriers then closed out the regular season on a six-match winning streak, with five of those matches against conference foes. Over the last six matches, Hiram has dropped just three sets.
"My expectation for the tournament is for us to continue to improve and compete at the level we can," Head Men's Volleyball Coach
Glen Conley said. "I expect us to continue to take care of the volleyball while making the most of our attack opportunities. I expect us to serve and block at the level we have during the second half of our conference play."
Senior's
Tom Supan and
Kilvio Montero lead the offensive attack for the Terriers. In conference play, Supan ranked ninth in kills per set (2.87) and Montero ranked tenth (2.79).
Additionally, Supan leads the conference in service aces (62) and service aces per set (0.65). The Medina, Ohio native is also second in points (357.5), third in digs (220), fifth in points per set (3.8) and sixth in digs per set (2.32).
Montero is also fourth in both service aces and service aces per set (0.38). The senior is eighth in points (305.0), tied for ninth in kills (251) and tenth in kills per set (3.4).
Fellow senior
Dangelo Boehner has been a wall up from for the Terriers. The Columbus, Ohio native is second in both block assists (74) and total blocks (90) in conference play. Boehner is also fourth in AMCC play in attack percentage (.317), tied for fourth in solo blocks (16), third in blocks per set (0.85) and tenth in points (297.0)
Nipomo, Calif. native
Andrew Diaz de Padilla leads the Terriers and is second in conference play in assists per set (8.16) and third overall in assists (702).
Senior libero
Cory Fischer ranks fourth in the conference in digs (215).
"I'm excited to see us rise to the occasion when we are playing in a one-and-done situation," Conley said. "I look forward to seeing us compete for a conference championship."
As a team, Hiram is third in the conference in kills (1114), assists (994) and digs (1159). The Terriers also lead the conference in services aces (202) and second in both total blocks (192) and points (1505.5)
Medaille finished the regular season with a 10-16 record going 7-9 in conference play. The Mavericks won four of their final six regular-season matches, including a five-set win over No. 2 seed Geneva.
Malachi Jackson leads the offensive attack for the Mavericks and is second in the conference in kills (315) and kills per set (3.46).
Collectively, Medaille finished conference play with the second most service aces per set (1.69) and third most service aces (154).
Hiram faced off with Medaille twice this season, winning both matches. In their first meeting, the two squads met in a neutral site match in Cresson, Pa. on Feb. 26 where the Terriers won 3-1. Hiram closed out the regular season with a 3-0 defeat of the Mavericks in another neutral site match in Latrobe, Pa on April 2.
Penn State Behrend enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed after compiling a 14-2 conference record while previously mentioned Geneva enters as the No. 2 seed with a conference record of 13-3. Hiram and Penn State Altoona round out the top four seeds for the tournament.
"There are always opportunities for players to step up and do extraordinary things in playoff situations," Conley said. "I anticipate that we will have numerous players do that."
The No. 3-seeded Terriers host the No. 6 seed Mavericks in the AMCC Men's Volleyball Championship Tournament Quarterfinals on Tuesday, April 5 at 7:00 p.m., with the winner advancing to the AMCC Tournament Semifinals on Friday night.
