Hiram Baseball Takes Game Two Over Wabash in Walk-off Fashion on Senior Day

HIRAM, Ohio – April 30, 2022 – Hiram baseball captured a walk-off win in game two of their North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader over Wabash by a final score of 6-5 in 11 innings. The Terriers fell in game one by a final of 8-6.

Game #1: Wabash 8, Hiram 6
In the top of the first inning, AJ Reed hit an RBI single that got Wabash on the scoreboard in the first inning. Camden Scheidt scored on a wild pitch in the next frame with the Little Giants ahead 2-0 after one inning of play.

Hiram plated their first run of the day in the fourth inning on an RBI sacrifice fly from Hal Walker Jr. The Terriers continued chipping away over the next three innings with Cody Wilson reaching on a fielder's choice that allowed for Chaisson Marrs to tie the game up in the fifth.

A big RBI triple off the bat of Walker Jr. gave Hiram the 3-2. Kyle Workman followed the RBI extra-base hit with an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Cody Wilson.

The visitors scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning, going up 8-4. Two runners came across the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Hiram fell 8-6 in game one.

Senior Declan Ange opened the game for the Terriers pitching the first two innings. In relief, Stephen Javorek gave up three hits in five innings of work along with three strikeouts. Cooper Smith recorded one out. Jacob Kocuba (3-3) took the loss for Hiram.

At the plate, Wilson and Caithaml had two hits in game one. Wilson and Connor Bansek each scored two runs with Walker Jr. collecting two RBI.
 
Game #2: Hiram 6, Wabash 5 (11 innings)
Through the first three innings of the second game of the afternoon, both teams combined for just three hits in three innings vs. starting pitchers Jack Conley and Grant Stratton.

Workman drilled his seventh home run of the season in the fourth innings on a solo shot to left field with Hiram playing from in front early.

In the next inning, Wabash evened the game at one with Michael Galanos scoring after a fielding error.

Reece Bauer in the top of the seventh inning for the Little Giants before scoring on a balk one batter later.

Hiram got the run back in the eighth after Walker Jr. hit an RBI double scoring Workman. Devin Houdeshell brought Walker Jr. home on an RBI single with the Terriers now up 3-2.

Liam Patton reached on a fielding error the next inning that allowed for Austin Simmers to score and for the game to go to extra innings.

A two-run single opened up the 11th inning off the bat of Kamden Early. Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the 11th, Kobe Hunter opened the inning with a single. Chaisson Marrs walked before Michael Corsillo hit a two-run single to tie the game back up.

Finally, Curtis Caithaml delivered the game-winning RBI single that scored Corsillo, clinching the 6-5 extra-inning win.

Conley put together another excellent start on the mound for the Terriers going 6.2 innings allowing just one earned run and picking up five strikeouts. A plethora of relievers saw action in game two including Matthew Kardos, Aidan Stephens, Sam Boyle, Robert James and Austin Smith who all allowed no earned runs in their appearances. Smith took home the win and is now 1-2 on the campaign.

Walker Jr. and Caithaml had the multi-hit games for Hiram in the win with three and two hits respectively. Workman was the lone Terrier to score two runs in game two.  

Hiram is now 13-21 and 3-11 in NCAC play with two more conference series to go on the season.

The Terriers return home on Monday, May 2 at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader vs. Mount Union.
