HIRAM, Ohio – May 2, 2022 – Hiram baseball split a non-conference doubleheader at Fishel Field at Proverbs Park falling in game one 13-3. In game two, a pinch-hit three-run home run from
Evan Fairbanks helped secure a 4-3 win. Both games were seven innings.
GAME ONE: Mount Union 13, Hiram 3:
Trey Weaver started the scoring for the Purple Raiders in the second inning hitting an RBI single making the score 1-0. Jaired Lehman reached on a fielder's choice in the same inning, causing another run to cross the plate.
In the third inning, Mount Union opened the game up with a seven-run inning. Walker Marlowe started the scoring with an RBI single followed by Eric Shilling doing the same thing one batter later. Weaver's three-run home run made the score 8-0 before another run scored closing out the inning at 9-0.
Kyle Workman doubled in
Curtis Caithaml in the third, plating the first run of the game for the Terriers.
Mount Union pieced together four more runs in the fourth and fifth, extending the lead to 13-1.
Kyle Adams' two-run single wrapped up the scoring for Hiram in the sixth, making the final score of game one, 13-3.
In game one,
Chaisson Marrs and Adams had two hits. Adams was also the leading RBI getter with two.
On the mound,
Daniel Quintero Jr. had three strikeouts in his one inning of relief.
Sam Boyle (0-2) took the loss.
GAME TWO: Hiram 4, Mount Union 3:
Starter pitchers Ryan Osman and
Jack Longar flew through the first two innings with no runs allowed.
Zack Mazza brought in the first run of game on an RBI double that scored Joey Procop in the third inning.
Workman quickly answered the following frame, hitting an RBI single that scored
Connor Bansek in the fourth.
Austin Smith got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning, holding Mount Union scoreless.
In the bottom of the inning, Bansek and
Kobe Hunter had singles, but no further damage was done for the Terriers.
Workman walked to start the sixth inning, with Marrs singling giving Hiram two runners on with nobody out. In a pinch-hit appearance,
Evan Fairbanks hit his third home run of the season over the left field fence, giving the home team a 4-3 lead.
The Purple Raiders loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but
Jacob Kocuba closed out the game with getting a Mount Union batter to fly out to second base, closing out the win.
Bansek and Marrs were the leading hit getters in game two getting two each. On his three-run shot, Fairbanks had a game-high three RBI.
Longar finished his outing with four innings pitched and two strikeouts. Smith had no earned runs in his appearance with one strikeout. Kocuba improved to 4-3 on the year, capturing the win. In his 1.2 innings pitched, the right-hander had two punch outs.
With the win, Hiram improves to 14-22 on the year as they finish non-conference play. The Terriers next hit the diamond on Wednesday, May 7 at Ohio Wesleyan for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
