MEADVILLE, Pa. – April 20, 2022 – Hiram baseball split a midweek North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader at Allegheny. The Terriers won game one 2-0 and dropped game two 6-2.
GAME ONE: Hiram 2, Allegheny 0
Starting pitchers
Jack Conley and Bobby Kusinsky shined through nearly the entirety of game one allowing a limited amount of baserunners.
Curtis Caithaml and Jacob Budnar singled in the first inning, but each was halted on the base paths.
In the fourth inning, Brett Heckert was able to single and steal second base, but no further damage was done by the Allegheny offense.
The Gators again were able to reach second base in the sixth inning, but no further damage was done with Heckert left stranded on second.
Michael Corsillo was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning and then stole second base. Hiram was then the team with the runner left stranded.
After seven dominant innings,
Jacob Kocuba came in for relief for Hiram. The right-handed pitcher allowed just one baserunner in the eighth inning.
In the ninth,
Curtis Caithaml singled followed by
Kyle Workman delivering with a double.
Connor Bansek hit a huge two-run single to open the game up.
Kocuba closed out the ninth inning with the Terriers holding on for the victory.
At the plate, Caithaml had two hits with Workman having one. Bansek claimed two RBI and a hit in the win.
Conley pitched seven innings of shutout baseball with seven strikeouts. Kocuba picked up his second win of the season after throwing two innings with a punch out.
GAME TWO: Allegheny 6, Hiram 2
Tyson Bryant-Dawson started the scoring in game two for the home team, reaching home on a balk in the second inning. Sullivan Schueltz picked up the second run on an RBI single.
In the fourth inning, Jake Stotsky scored after a wild pitch, increasing the Allegheny lead to 3-0. Stotsky tacked on another run the following inning on an RBI groundout.
After two more runs in the sixth frame,
Kyle Workman launched his fifth home run of the season on a solo shot in the seventh inning.
In the ninth inning,
Devin Houdeshell blasted an RBI double that scored Workman making the score 6-2.
The comeback effort fell short, with
Aidan Stephens (0-1) taking the loss. In relief,
Sam Boyle retired the lone batter he faced.
In game two, Workman and
Cody Wilson had two hits. Workman and Houdeshell each had an RBI.
With the split, Hiram goes to 10-16 on the year and is now 2-8 in NCAC play.
Hiram baseball continues with North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday, April 23 playing at DePauw with a doubleheader starting at noon.
