HIRAM, Ohio - April 2, 2022 – Ambrose Colliluori tallied a career-high six goals, but Hiram men's lacrosse fell to the Oberlin College Yeomen, 26-8 on Saturday at Charles A. Henry Field at Malmisur Stadium.
After the Yeomen won the opening face-off, Oberlin quickly got on the scoreboard with Max Cha's unassisted goal a minute and 29 seconds into the opening period.
The Yeomen would score four straight to open the first quarter before Colliluori and the Terriers finally got on the scoreboard. After a save by
Bricen Jones, the Terrier offense cleared the ball and set things up offensively for Colliluori, who found the back of the net off an assist from
Brett Johnson to make it 4-1 with 10:47 left in the first.
Oberlin though, would add six more goals in the first quarter, extending their lead out to 10-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Colliluori got Hiram back on the scoreboard to open the second quarter, scoring off an assist from
Noah Pilgram with 10:36 left in the first half to cut Oberlin's lead to 10-2.
And while Jones and Hiram's defense held Oberlin at bay for the first seven minutes of the second quarter, the Yeomen got back on the scoreboard on Cha's third goal of the afternoon to take an 11-2 lead with 8:30 left in the second.
Oberlin added another on Sam Ryu's unassisted goal before Colliluori completed his first-half hat trick, scoring off an assist from
Isaiah Davilla to cut Oberlin's lead to 12-3.
The Yeomen would add five more in the second quarter to take a 17-3 lead at the half, before scoring five more to open a 22-3 lead midway through the third.
Colliluori added another goal, his fourth of the day, again off an assist from Pilgram, to make it 22-4, before Hal Nathan, off an assist from Matt Rudella, gave the Yeomen a 23-4 lead heading into the fourth.
And after assisting on two of Colliluori's goals, Pilgram returned the favor to start the fourth, scoring on Colliluori's assist to make it 24-5 with 10:07 left to play.
Colliluori then notched his fifth goal, this time off Flugum's assist, to make it 25-6 with 9:42 to play.
Oberlin would add another on John McDonnell's man-up goal with 7:58 left in the fourth, but Hiram's defense would hold the Yeomen off the scoreboard the rest of the way, and the Terriers themselves would pick up two more goals.
Colliluori picked up his sixth and his 24th goal of the year with just under two minutes to play following a Yeomen turnover, completing a double-hat trick for the first time this season.
And after three Oberlin penalties, the Terriers got on the scoreboard again before the final buzzer, as Colliluori found Flugum for the score, cutting the final deficit to 26-8.
Hiram falls to 4-3 (0-2 NCAC) with the loss, while Oberlin moves to 7-1 (2-0) with the win.
Offensively, Colliluori scored or assisted on every Hiram goal, tallying a career-high six goals along with two assists and one caused turnover. Flugum and Pilgram each added a score, while Pilgram notched a pair of assists, and Flugum added one.
Defensively, Davilla,
Michael Manos and
Trevor Nordstrom each tallied three groundballs. In goal for Hiram, Jones tallied 14 saves in just under 39 minutes of action, while
Jacob Hanrahan added another.
The Terriers will look to bounce back when they travel to Springfield, Ohio on Saturday, April 9 for a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup against the Wittenberg Tigers scheduled for 1 p.m.
