MEADVILLE, Pa. - April 12, 2022 – Hiram College men's lacrosse fell to the Allegheny College Gators by the final score of 13-2 on Tuesday evening at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
Though the Terriers won the opening face-off, Allegheny got off to a hot start, forcing a Hiram turnover and notching the game's first score on Nicholas Cimillo's goal, assisted by CT Graniel, just under two minutes into the first quarter.
The Gators would add another on Graniel's first goal of the day, unassisted, with 9:36 to play in the first, but
Bricen Jones and the Terrier defense would keep Allegheny's offense at bay for much of the first period, with six first-quarter saves.
However, Allegheny's defense matched the Terrier's effort, holding Hiram to just two shots in the opening period, before the Gators got on the scoreboard again midway through the second quarter.
Back-to-back goals by Cimillo and Jack Cushwa extended the Gators' lead to 4-0 with 9:19 left before the half, and Allegheny added two more just before the end of the half, taking advantage of a Hiram penalty to take a 6-0 lead into the halftime break.
After a bit of scoreless stretch to open the third,
Ethan Mayer got the Terriers on the scoreboard with 7:27 to play in the third, notching the Terriers' first goal of the evening off an assist from
Trevor Flugum.
Allegheny quickly answered with a goal from Pete Schellbach, extending their lead back to five, but just over two minutes later,
William Luketich pulled Hiram back within five, 7-2, with his unassisted goal with 2:37 to play in the third.
The Gators would take a 7-2 lead into the final frame, but quickly rattled off a pair of scores to start the period, opening a 9-2 lead with just under 14 minutes left.
Allegheny would add four more as the Gators' defense held Hiram off the scoreboard the rest of the way, finishing off the 13-2 victory.
Hiram falls to 4-5 (0-4 NCAC) with the loss, while the Gators move to 4-8 (2-2 NCAC) with the win.
Offensively, Luketich and Mayer each tallied a goal, while Flugum notched Hiram's lone assist. In the face-off circle,
Markus Johnson won 10 of his 17 face-offs.
Defensively,
Gray Perry led the Terriers with 10 groundballs and two caused turnovers, while in goal for Terriers, Jones made 17 saves.
The Terriers are back in action on Saturday, April 16 when they travel to Gambier, Ohio for a 1:00 p.m. matchup against the Kenyon College Lords.
