FORT MYERS, Fla. – March 6, 2022 – Hiram baseball dropped their season opener vs. Otterbein by a score of 11-6 at Terry Park Field #4 in Fort Myers, Fla.
Otterbein came out with a bang, scoring four first-inning runs off of Hiram starter
Daniel Quintero Jr. Jamie Perebzak doubled to left center scoring two. A sacrifice fly by Zak Repar and an RBI fielder's choice put the Cardinals up 4-0.
In the second inning, Hiram answered with two runs.
Evan Fairbanks doubled in
Kyle Workman, followed by
Kyle Adams picking up an RBI groundout scoring
Devin Houdeshell making it 4-2.
Luke Barber extended the Cardinals lead with a solo home run, pushing Otterbein further ahead at 5-2
The Terriers got a run back in the third inning after a
Curtis Caithaml RBI single scored
Cody Wilson.
Hiram's comeback attempt continued in the fifth inning with
Chaisson Marrs singling in
Michael Corsillo making it a one-run game at 5-4. Workman then hit a two-run blast over the right field wall, giving Hiram the 6-5 lead.
Sam Edgell blasted the third home run of the game for Otterbein on a two-run shot in the sixth inning with OU retaking the lead.
The Cardinals added some insurance runs in the seventh, adding three more runs making their lead 11-6.
No runs were scored in the eighth or ninth inning, with Otterbein spoiling the Terriers opening day, winning 11-6.
Workman collected three hits with two runs and two RBI batting in the cleanup position. Additionally, Marrs, Caithaml and Corsillo all picked up two hits. Marrs and Caithaml also had an RBI with
Evan Fairbanks also pitching in with an RBI and a hit.
After the first inning, Quintero Jr. settled down and totaled 5.0 innings pitched with three strikeouts.
Aidan Stephens pitched two scoreless innings of relief picking up three strikeouts.
Austin Smith (0-1) took the loss for Hiram.
The Terriers fall to 0-1 on the season after the season opener. Hiram next takes the field on Saint John's on Tuesday, March 8 with a doubleheader starting at 9 a.m.
