FORT MYERS, Fla. – March 8, 2022 – Hiram baseball picked up their first win of the season after splitting a doubleheader vs. Saint John's on Tuesday afternoon. The Terriers dropped game one by a score of 7-1 and won game two, 8-7 at Terry Park Field #1 in Fort Myers, Fla.
Game #1: Saint John's 7, Hiram 1
Stephen Javorek and Saint John's starter Will Fazio breezed through the first two frames without any damage done.
The Johnnies' top-of-the-order started the scoring in the third inning. Joe Becker hit an RBI single, followed by Matthew Hayford hitting an RBI groundout.
Up 2-0, Saint John's continued to add runs the following inning. Jordan Amundson hit an RBI triple, then scored on a Soren Roe single.
Becker put the game away for the Johnnies after hitting a three-run home run with the score now 7-0.
Hiram's lone run came on an RBI walk by
Cody Wilson that scored
Hal Walker Jr.
Will Fazio picked up the win in game one for Saint John's. Javorek (0-1) took the loss after pitching 5.1 innings with a strikeout. Freshman
Jack Conley pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief with a strikeout of his own.
At the plate, Walker Jr. had three hits with a run scored.
Connor Bansek had two walks in the defeat.
Game #2: Hiram 8, Saint John's 7
Hiram started game two with a big five-run inning. In the top of the first, Walker Jr. hit a two-run single scoring Wilson and
Curtis Caithaml. Bansek and
Kyle Workman had RBI walks, with
Michael Corsillo reaching on a fielding error that scored Walker Jr.
It was once again the top of the order for Saint John's that started scoring. Becker reached on a fielding error that brought a run across the plate. Hayford dropped an RBI sacrifice bunt making the score 5-2.
Zach Selchow helped bring in another run the following inning on a sacrifice fly making it 5-3. In need of some insurance runs, Walker Jr. delivered big with a two-run double in the fourth inning pushing the Hiram lead to 7-4.
Evan Fairbanks chipped in with another run in the sixth inning on an RBI single scoring Wilson.
Saint John's put up a fight in their second to last inning at the plate. Ethan Roe hit a bases-clearing double to left-center that brought in three Johnnies baserunners cutting the Hiram lead to 8-7.
In the final frame,
Jacob Kocuba allowed just one baserunner, picking up the win after five innings of relief. Additionally, the sophomore had six strikeouts with no walks.
In game two, Wilson and Walker Jr. had two hits. Wilson also scored twice with Walker Jr. posting four RBI in the win.
With their first win of the season, Hiram is now 1-2 on the season.
The team is back in action, tomorrow Wednesday, March 9, with a doubleheader vs. Muskingum starting at 9 a.m. at Terry Park Field #1.
