GREENVILLE, Pa. – March 30, 2022 – Hiram men's volleyball bested Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) foe, Thiel, by a score of 3-0 on the road Wednesday night.
The opening set started tight with neither team getting that large of a lead. After a
Kilvio Montero kill and
Tom Supan ace, Hiram led 9-7. Moments later, the Terriers opened up a 5-0 run finished off by a kill from
Nathan Cassell making the score 14-8.
Thiel scored, but the visitors started opening up the score in set one as the end came closer. Already up 19-13, Hiram nearly ended the first set with six-straight points, connecting on four points in a row. Supan ended the first set with a service ace, winning 25-14.
Set two started similarly to the first set with a tight start with both teams tied at eight. Thiel scored the next two points, keeping the set tight through the early portion. With the score all square at 11, Hiram scored three straight.
Late in the set, the home team was able to keep things close now trailing 18-17. The next four points, however, were scored by the Terriers finished off with a kill from Montero with the score now 22-17 Hiram. Back-to-back errors from Thiel closed the set out, with the Terriers winning, 25-19.
The Tomcats started the third set with a 6-5 lead before the next five points were scored by Hiram. Down 12-8 a few points later in the set, Thiel went on a massive run, scoring seven of the eight next points going back up, leading 14-12.
The back-and-forth between both teams continued. The Terriers seven of the next eight points, finished off by kills from Supan and Montero.
Holding onto a 22-20 lead late, Hiram scored the final three points of the set and match, winning 25-20.
Montero continues to be a force on the offensive end for the Terriers posting 13 kills in the match with six digs. Supan almost notched a double-double with 11 kills and eight digs.
Cory Fischer and
Nathan Cassell led with 13 and ten digs.
Andrew Diaz de Padilla was the leading assist man with 32.
The Terriers improve to 17-11 on the year and notch their tenth conference win where they are now 10-4. Additionally, Hiram has won four straight matches dropping just three sets during that period.
Hiram men's volleyball concludes the regular season on Saturday, April 2 with a tri-match vs. Saint Vincent and Medaille in Latrobe, Pa. beginning at 2:30 p.m.
