LATROBE, Pa. – April 2, 2022 – Hiram men's volleyball defeated Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) foes Saint Vincent and Medaille each by a score of 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. The team has won six-straight matches closing out the regular season.
MATCH #1: Hiram 3, Medaille 0
Hiram was in control right away opening the first set up 8-3 after a
Tom Supan kill. After a few back-and-forth rallies from each team, the Terriers extended the lead out to 18-10 after a Mavericks attack error.
The Terriers finished out the first set scoring five of the final six points with a
Kilvio Montero kill giving the team the 25
th point.
In set two, Hiram began on an even bigger start than set one getting out to a 12-3 with a four-point run that included two
Dangelo Boehner kills.
The big lead continued growing for the Terriers, going up 19-9 after a Boehner kill had Hiram sitting comfortably. Five of the final seven points were scored by Hiram giving the team a 25-15 set two win.
Set three was the closest set of the match, but Hiram still held strong. With the score tied at eight, the Terriers went on a mini-run, scoring three of the next four points going up 11-9.
Six-straight points with back-to-back kills from
Kilvio Montero blasted Hiram off to a 17-11 lead. Medaille was able to cut the lead to 20-15, but the big run helped the Terriers win set three, 25-18.
Boehner led with ten kills with Supan and Montero just behind him with nine.
Andrew Diaz de Padilla led with 25 assists. Montero and
Nathan Cassell led with eight digs.
MATCH #2: Hiram 3, Saint Vincent 0
The second match of the day for Hiram started with Saint Vincent going up 8-6.
An incredible 11 point run followed for the Terriers commanding a 15-6 lead finished off with a Supan kill. Holding a 21-11 lead, the final four points of the set were scored by Hiram with back-to-back errors from Saint Vincent.
The Terriers jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second set after a Bearcat attack error.
Nathan Cassell scored a kill pushing the lead further to 13-5.
A steady lead was built up for Hiram scoring five of six points near the end of the second set. Another Cassell kill had the Terriers set two winners at 25-18.
Saint Vincent started the third set cutting the Terriers' lead to 8-6 after a kill. From there, Hiram scored five of the next six points after an SVC service error making the score 13-7.
Hiram pulled away scoring five straight making the lead 21-9. A big six-point swing put the Bearcats down 23-16, but the Terriers had built up enough of a lead winning the third set, 25-17.
For the match, Cassell led with 11 kills and Supan had eight.
Cory Fischer had 11 digs and Supan also reached the double-figure mark with ten digs.
Hiram finishes the regular season at 19-11 and 12-4 in AMCC play. In the six-match winning streak, the Terriers have dropped just three sets.
The team gears up for AMCC Tournament play hosting Medaille on Tuesday, April 5 with first-serve scheduled for 7 p.m.
