HIRAM, Ohio – March 19, 2022 – Hiram men's volleyball split their senior day tri-match defeating Mount Aloysius 3-0 and falling to Penn State Behrend 3-0.
Match #1 Hiram 3, Mount Aloysius 0
Hiram started off the first match red hot after three-straight
Kilvio Montero service aces saw the Terriers go up 10-2. Mount Aloysius was able to bounce back and create a back-and-forth middle of the set, but Hiram soon took over.
After a Hiram attack error made the score 13-6, the Mounties scored three-straight with the score now 14-9. The Terriers pulled even further ahead scoring five of the next six points increasing their lead to 19-10. Supan finished the first set with a kill as Hiram won 25-13.
Dangelo Boehner put the Terriers up 7-4 after a kill in the early part of the second set. A kill by Supan helped Hiram pull further away now up 11-5. Later in the set, Boehner had a stretch with three-straight kills as the home team had the end in sight up 20-10.
Hiram closed out the set scoring the final four points winning 25-14.
Mount Aloysius started the third set with a 6-3 lead. The Terriers put together three-straight points going up 11-9 in a stretch that included a
Matthew Albano service ace and
Josh Jones kill.
The middle portion of the set remained tight after Jones had another kill up 17-14. Hiram pulled away late, scoring four of the final five points capped off by a
Connor Tilton kill giving them the 25-18 win.
Individually, Boehner led with eight kills with Supan having six and Montero five.
Andrew Diaz de Padilla had 20 assists in the straight-set win.
Match #2 Penn State Behrend 3, Hiram 0
Garrett Scheidegger put Hiram up 5-1 after an early kill for the Terriers. Down 9-4 after an attack error, the Lions came back to take the lead at 12-10 after scoring five-straight points.
As the set progressed, Montero put the Terriers up 16-15, but Behrend responded in a hurry. The visitors scored five of the next six points going up 20-17 after a service ace. Another Montero kill tied the game at 22, but the Lions scored the three final points, winning 27-25.
Penn State Behrend took a slight lead in the second set and held firm. The Lions went up 12-9 near the middle of the first set looking to take a 12-9 lead. The lead continued to grow as Behrend stretched the lead to 17-12 as the finish line loomed.
The early lead proved to be enough for the Lions, as back-to-back attack errors from Hiram saw the team go up 23-16. The visiting side won set two by a score of 25-19.
Set three started back-and-forth, taking a brief 8-6 lead after a Hiram service error. The Terriers answered, scoring three-straight as the tight third set continued.
Penn State Behrend went up 17-14 as the road team looked to put the match away. Down 22-18 late, both teams traded points late, but Behrend held on for the 25-21 win.
Montero led the team offensively in game two with 11 kills. Diaz de Padilla again led in assists with 27.
Cory Fischer had nine digs.
Hiram moves to 13-11 on the year and 7-4 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) play.
The Terriers' next play on Wednesday, March 23 at Baldwin Wallace with first-serve at 7 p.m.
