Men's Volleyball Finishes Non-Conference Play with Win Over Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio – March 23, 2022 – Hiram men's volleyball took down Baldwin Wallace for the third time this season, defeating the Yellow Jackets 3-1 on Wednesday night.

Hiram started set one with an 8-6 lead after a Nathan Cassell kill gave the Terriers the slight lead. Back-to-back kills from Tom Supan a few points later had Hiram sitting with a comfortable 14-8 advantage.

As the first set reached its conclusion, the visitors were able to sit on the lead they built up. A kill from Kilvio Montero and a Baldwin Wallace service ace gave Hiram the first set win at 25-17.

After starting the second set down 9-6, three-straight points were scored by Hiram. Down 11-9, the Terriers scored six of the next seven points going up 15-12. The momentum continued for Hiram, now up 21-15 as the end of the second set approached.

It was once again an attack error from BW that closed out the second set for the Terriers, winning 25-19.

Set three started as the closest set of the night with neither team pulling ahead. It wasn't until the middle portion of the set that the home team started to build a lead. After an attack error from Montero, BW took a 17-15 lead and didn't trail again for the rest of the set.

The Yellow Jackets ended set three scoring four of the final five points, winning 25-18.

Hiram started the fourth set with a 5-0 lead after multiple BW errors. After the big start for the Terriers, three-straight went to the way of the visitors capped off by a Supan kill. Up 11-4 early, Hiram looked to pull away even further.

Baldwin Wallace cut the lead to 15-11, but the next three points were scored by the Terriers taking an 18-11 lead.

Ending the set and the match was a Garrett Scheidegger kill, with Hiram winning 25-17.

With the victory, Hiram moves to 14-11 on the year as the team concludes non-conference play.

Supan, Montero and Dangelo Boehner all reached double digits in kills. Supan had 15, Montero 12 and Boehner had 11. Andrew Diaz de Padilla led with 38 assists. Montero also added 13 digs.

Hiram's season hits the home stretch with five matches remaining. The team next plays on Saturday, March 26 in Hamburg, N.Y. facing Hilbert and Penn State Altoona. Matches will be played at 2:30 and 5 p.m.
