BEREA, Ohio – March 19, 2022 – Hiram baseball split a doubleheader at Baldwin Wallace falling to the Yellow Jackets 18-3 and defeating Defiance 14-4. Both games were seven innings due to run rules.
Game 1: #17 Baldwin Wallace 18, Hiram 3
Baldwin Wallace got off to a quick start in the first inning with Drew Wilson hitting an RBI single as the host school played out in front at 1-0. Ryan Guggenheim hit a bases-clearing double as Baldwin Wallace raced out to a 4-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets added three more runs in the second inning as they began to pull away now up 7-0.
After the conclusion of the fourth inning, Baldwin Wallace took a commanding 16-0 lead.
Hiram got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning with
Aidan Jantz hitting a two-run double scoring
Carter Smith and
Tanner Allison. Jantz later scored on a passed ball, but the Yellow Jackets won 18-3.
Daniel Quintero Jr. took the loss in the first game of the day for Hiram. In relief, freshman
Jack Longar pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
Game 2: Hiram 14, Defiance 4
Defiance started off the first inning with an RBI triple and a runner scoring on a passed ball. In the third and fourth innings, two more runs came across the plate with the Yellow Jackets leading 4-0 in the fourth inning.
The comeback began in the bottom of the fourth inning for Hiram.
Kyle Workman started the scoring with an RBI single, with
Curtis Caithaml delivering with an RBI double.
After cutting the Defiance lead to 4-2, the Terriers continued scoring in the fifth inning. Caithaml reached first on a throwing error as
Cody Wilson scored.
Evan Fairbanks then gave Hiram their first lead of the day with a two-run single, putting Hiram up 5-4. The scoring continued for the Terriers as
Devin Houdeshell hit an RBI single.
After two more runs scored on passed balls,
Hal Walker Jr. had an RBI walk that capped the scoring as the Terriers were now in the driver's seat up 9-4.
Hiram scored five more runs in the seventh inning, headlined by a two-run single by
Cody Wilson, finishing off their 14-4 win in seven innings.
Stephen Javorek made the start for the Terriers pitching five innings allowing two earned runs with four strikeouts. The right-handed pitcher earned his first win on the year and is now 1-1 on the young season.
Jacob Kocuba finished the game on the mound pitching two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
Connor Bansek led the team with two hits in what was a balanced hitting attack in game two. Wilson, Caithaml, Fairbanks and Workman all had two RBI against Defiance.
This is now the second time on the season that the team has scored more than ten runs in a single game.
Hiram is now 4-7 on the year with the one win.
The Terriers next take on Pitt. Bradford on Sunday, March 20 at 4 p.m. in Berea, Ohio.
