HIRAM, Ohio – March 16, 2022 – Hiram men's volleyball picked up a big Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) win over Geneva on Wednesday night, defeating the Golden Tornadoes, 3-1.

Set one started tightly, as did nearly every set throughout the match. After a brief Hiram lead, Jake Williams had back-to-back service aces pushing the Geneva lead out to 7-5. A few points later, the Golden Tornadoes increased that lead to 13-9, looking to pull away.

Hiram quickly answered, scoring four-straight points, tying the match at 13. Down the stretch run of the first set, both teams traded points. Down 19-18, the Terriers scored three in a row, taking a 21-19 lead. The visitors tied the game at 22, but three of the final four points of the set went to Hiram, with a Kilvio Montero kill getting the 25th point.

At the beginning of the second set, Hiram started with a 7-4 lead after a series of Geneva attack errors and a kill from Montero and Tom Supan. Up 12-9 after yet another Montero kill, the Golden Tornadoes tied the set at 12. A pair of rallies highlighted the stretch run in the second set.

With Hiram up 17-14, Geneva put together four-straight points going up 18-17. In the final points of the second set, Peter Barbato of Geneva had a service ace resulting in Hiram taking a 23-21 lead. The final four points of the set, however, were scored by the Golden Tornadoes with the visitors winning the second set, 26-24.

Kills by Nathan Cassell and Montero were a part of the three-point run early in the third set with Hiram going up 8-6. Later in the set, the Terriers snuck out to a 14-11 lead with Garrett Scheidegger, Cassell and Montero getting kills. The small lead continued on throughout the third set with Hiram hanging on enough.

After a Barbato kill, Geneva cut the lead to 21-19, but the Terriers finished the third set scoring four of the final four points, winning 25-20.

Back-to-back kills from Montero pushed the Terriers out to a 6-3 lead at the beginning of the fourth set. Geneva fought back tying the fourth set at ten. The fourth set remained very tight as it continued through the middle portions. Tom Supan picked up two-straight kills that brought the Hiram lead out to 19-16 late.

Geneva got hot late, however, scoring five of six points over a stretch that saw them hold a 22-21 lead. Four-straight big points from the Terriers lifted them over Geneva by a score of 25-22.

Throughout the match, Hiram posted the highest dig total in program history with 77. Additionally, Andrew Diaz de Padilla had 43 assists, good for the second-most in program history.

Montero had a big night for Hiram, posting 21 digs with 20 kills. Supan recorded 17 digs and 14 kills. Along with his 43 assists, Diaz de Padilla had 20 digs. Cassell also reached the double-figure mark with ten kills.
