HIRAM, Ohio – February 23, 2022 – Hiram men's volleyball dropped a non-conference match inside Price Gymnasium vs. Mount Union on Wednesday night by a score of 3-1.
At the beginning of set one, Hiram went up 8-5 after two Mount Union errors. The Purple Raiders quickly answered, rattling off three-straight points tying the match at nine. A flurry of traded points ensued in the middle portion of the set before Hiram picked up a big run.
Down 18-16, the Terriers scored five-straight, capped off by an attack error from the visitors with the home team in control 21-18.
Mount Union got the first set to within one point late, but Hiram won set one, 25-23 with a
Tom Supan kill being the difference-maker.
The back-and-forth affair continued into the start of set two before the Purple Raiders went on a run. Five of six points went to UMU, going up 13-8.
The lead continued to grow for Mount Union, possessing a 17-10 lead. A
Nathan Cassell kill and
Dangelo Boehner service ace got Hiram to within four at 23-19, but the damage was already done. Mount Union won set two, 25-20.
Back-to-back kills from the visitors put them up 10-7 at the beginning of the third set. A huge six-point run followed for the Purple Raiders going up 19-10 after a Hiram attack error. The lead proved to be too large for the Hiram comeback, with the road team sitting comfortably late in the set.
Two
Garrett Scheidegger made up two of the three final points for Hiram, but the Purple Raiders secured the 28-26 win in set three.
Set four was the closest set of the match early and late. Mount Union took the slight 12-10 lead after two Jakob Yarosh kills, but the lead wouldn't hold long. The Terriers picked up four of the next five points, with a Supan kill making it 16-14. Mount Union had a service error with a kill coming from
Nathan Cassell making the score 22-19.
The Purple Raiders rallied, scoring five of the next six, now up 24-23. Up 25-24 after a kill from Boehner, Hiram looked to put the match away. Mount Union captured the final two points winning the set 28-26.
Cassell led the team with 15 attacks while picking up nine digs. Boehner tallied 13 kills, with Supan and
Josh Jones netting ten. Jones picked up a double-double with 11 digs which tied teammates
Cory Fischer and
Andrew Diaz de Padilla for most on the team.
With the loss, Hiram moves to 9-4 on the season and 6-1 inside Price Gymnasium.
The team returns to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) play on Saturday, Feb. 26 playing in Cresson, Pa. against Medaille and Mount Aloysius at 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.
