HIRAM, Ohio – February 19, 2022 – Hiram men's volleyball went 2-0 in a Saturday tri-match featuring Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) foes Hilbert and Saint Vincent.
Match #1: Hiram 3, Hilbert 0
Hiram raced off to an 8-3 start to the match after an attack error from the Hawks. The lead continued to build up after a four-point run made the score 12-4 after a
Tom Supan kill. The Terriers again scored four-straight, this time after a
Dangelo Boehner kill that put the score at 19-9. Closing out the set, the home team scored four of the final five points with the final kill coming from
Garrett Scheidegger with Hiram winning the first set 25-14.
The second set started similarly to set one with an 8-2 start that include seven-straight points. After building up a 12-5 lead, Hiram rattled off ten points in an 11-point stretch with two Supan service aces. Already up by a commanding score of 22-7, the Terriers closed out the set by winning three of the final four points with Supan and
Josh Jones getting two kills to end the set by a score of 25-9.
As did the first two sets, the Terriers raced to a 9-3 lead that featured kills from
Matthew Albano and
Connor Tilton. As the set continued, back-to-back kills from
Jarod Leynes pushed the lead out to 14-7. After a Ryan Levcik kill, Hilbert cut the lead to 17-13. Both teams traded points as the final run of the set played out, but Hiram captured the three-set win, winning set three 25-20.
Boehner and Supan finished the match with ten kills each. Albano and
Andrew Diaz de Padilla each reached double-figures in the assists category, getting 21 and 13. Supan also led the team with nine digs.
Match #2 Hiram 3, Saint Vincent 0
In match two, a four-point run early put Hiram up 7-2 after a
Nathan Cassell service ace. The Terriers took a 13-4 lead after a Diaz de Padilla kill put the team in the driver's seat for a big first-set win.
The big lead ensued, with Hiram sitting comfortably up 20-10 after a Saint Vincent service error. The final five points of the first set went the way of Hiram's, with the home team winning 25-11.
At the start of the second set, Hiram went up 6-0 following a Scheidegger kill. Boehner racked up a service ace as the set continued on, with the score now favoring Hiram at 12-4. A six-point run capped off by a Supan kill had Hiram in dominant position up 18-5. Closing out the set were kills from Supan and Diaz de Padilla with the third set victory coming at 25-16.
Supan tallied a double-double in the second match picking up 14 digs and 11 kills. Boehner and Cassell nearly reached the double-figure mark with each putting up nine. Diaz de Padilla was the top assist getter, posting 25 for the match.
With the two wins, Hiram moves to 9-3 on the year and 3-0 in AMCC play. The Terriers remain undefeated inside Price Gymnasium at a perfect 6-0 clip.
In the current seven-match winning streak, Hiram has dropped just four sets and have won three of those matches in 3-0 fashion.
Hiram continues their season hosting Mount Union on Wednesday, Feb. 23 inside Price Gymnasium with first-serve coming at 7 p.m.
