Hiram Men's Volleyball Opens Conference Play with Win at Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – February 17, 2022 – Hiram men's volleyball opened Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) play with a 3-1 win at Geneva.

In set one, neither team jumped out early. With the score tied at ten, Hiram scored four of the next five points capped off by an attack error from Geneva going up 14-11. The Terriers continued to pull away in set one as the match continued going up 19-13 after another attack error from the Golden Tornadoes. Kills from Nathan Cassell and Josh Jones finished off the set for the visitors, with Hiram winning 25-19.

Hiram jumped out quickly with a big lead starting set two. Up 7-3 after a Cassell kill, the team put up four-straight points moments later. Tom Supan collected a kill with the Terriers now holding the big 2-5 lead. Geneva didn't go down without a fight, coming back to trail just 15-12. Seven-straight points went the way of Hiram's, with Jones picking up a kill late in the set with the team winning 22-12. The home team continued fighting back, but Andrew Diaz de Padilla secured a kill, winning the set 25-19.

Geneva started set three playing even with Hiram. With the score tied at seven, four of the next five points were picked up by the Golden Tornadoes now up 11-8. A four of five-point run went the way of the Terriers moments later, with the score now tied at 16 after a Dangelo Boehner service ace. The final points of the set were picked up by Geneva with the home team closing out set three on a three-point run, winning 25-22.

Down 6-2 to start the fourth set, Hiram needed an answer to avoid set five. After a three-point run that included two Geneva errors, the score was now knotted up at nine. Three-straight points went the way of Hiram's, with two kills coming from Diaz de Padilla and Boehner now up 18-15. With the end in sight, the visitors rallied to finish out the set and the match. Freshman Garrett Scheidegger picked up the 25th point on a kill winning the set, 25-20.

Cassell led the team with 13 kills along with seven digs and five block assists. Supan recorded a double-double with 14 digs and 12 kills. Diaz de Padilla tallied a season-high 37 assists and his fourth-straight game with over 30.

With the win, the team moves to 7-3 on the year and start 1-0 in conference play. Hiram has now won five-straight matches dropping just four sets in that time.

The team continues AMCC play on Saturday, Feb. 19 taking on Hilbert and Saint Vincent in a tri-match beginning at 3 p.m. inside Price Gymnasium.
