HIRAM, Ohio – January 30, 2022 – Hiram men's basketball defeated DePauw in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) matchup Sunday afternoon inside Price Gymnasium, winning 66-61.
The first half started and remained tight throughout the entire 20 minutes.
Brodgie Gordon made a pair of free throws tying the game at eight just under four minutes in.
At the 13:20 mark, Elijah Hales put in a three-point shot giving DePauw the slight 14-10 lead.
Hiram got the lead back after Gordon made a jump shot, as the Terriers secured a 19-18 lead with 6:33 left in the first half.
Hales scored again on a made free throw, as the score got tied up again at 23 during the stretch run of the first half.
A three-point shot from
Chance Wells at the buzzer put Hiram up 29-28 at the end of the first half.
The back-and-forth affair continued at the start of the second half. Gordon gave the Terriers a one-point advantage after a made three, making the score 39-38 with just under 14 minutes left.
Kevin Beans Jr. made two free throws, followed by
Spencer Willman sinking a jump shot with under ten minutes left in regulation.
Oliver Clingain forced a DePauw timeout after making a layup that put the Terriers up 48-40.
Grant Niego quickly erased that lead, hitting a jumper in the lane at the 5:16 mark tying the ballgame at 50.
A
Doug Sartain triple with under three minutes left made it a multi-possession game with over two minutes left with the score now 60-53.
In the final two minutes of regulation, Beans Jr. sunk two free throws for Hiram, pushing the lead to six at 63-57. Hales followed that up with a layup and two free throws of his own, as the Tigers looked for a steal now trailing 64-61 with two seconds on the clock. Gordon finished the scoring for the day making two free throws, as Hiram won 66-61.
"I thought today was one of our more impressive wins of the season," said Head Coach
Taylor Roth. "We won despite not playing our best, which shows a tremendous amount of growth for our team. We have a lot to learn from today, but it is always better to learn after a win."
Gordon led the team with 18 points, 14 of which came during the second half. The senior also collected five assists and four rebounds. Beans Jr. and Wells each had 12 points.
With the win, Hiram has now won three in a row and five of their last seven. The Terriers are now 8-10 on the year and 5-7 in conference play.
The Terriers have a quick turnaround playing tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 31 at La Roche in the final non-conference game of the season. The tip-off time for that game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
