Hiram Men's Volleyball Drops Matches vs. #14 Marymount (Va.) and Lancaster Bible

LANCASTER, Pa. – January 29, 2022 – Hiram men's volleyball played in their first tri-match of the season in non-conference action dropping two matches to #14 Marymount (Va.) and Lancaster Bible. The Terriers fell 3-0 to the Saints and 3-1 to the Chargers.

MATCH 1: #14 Marymount (Va.) 3, Hiram 0
The first match of the day started tight with each team putting together a series of mini-runs early. A kill and service ace by Tom Supan gave Hiram a brief 8-7.

Marymount scored four-straight points as the Saints held the 16-14 lead at about the midway point. Coming down the stretch of the first set, Mies Olson picked up a kill with the score now all square at 20. After a Marymount service error, the Terriers and Saints went back-and-forth with each team picking up a point until the score was tied at 24. Ervin Harrell won the set for the Saints with a kill, as Marymount won set one, 26-24.

Marymount got off to a hot start in set two storming to a 9-1 lead. Dangelo Boehner picked up a kill, followed by a Saints attack error, as Hiram looked to come back down 17-7.

A five-point run near the end of the second set saw the Terriers now trail 19-12. Andrew Diaz de Padilla picked up two service aces in the stretch. Despite the run, Marymount would go on to win the second set, 25-15.

The Terriers began the third set with a 4-0 lead after Supan started the set off with two service aces and a kill. The single-digit portion of the third set continued to be a back-and-forth affair with Hiram slightly breaking away now up 14-9 following a kill from Diaz de Padilla.

Four-straight points from the Saints, followed by another five-point run put the Saints up 21-17 and in the driver's seat to win the set and match. Despite taking four of the final six points, Marymount held on for the 25-23 victory winning the match, 3-0.

In the first match, Kilvio Montero led the team with seven kills with Boehner right behind him with six. Diaz de Padilla had a team-leading 21 assists as well as five digs.

MATCH 2: Lancaster Bible 3, Hiram 1
At the start of the second match of the day, Hiram took a 5-3 lead in the first set after back-to-back aces from Supan and a kill from Montero. The Terriers then went on to lead 12-6 following four-straight points capped off by two Supan kills.

Later in the set, with Hiram winning 18-16, Lancaster Bible put together a four-point run with the Chargers now winning 20-18. The score remained tight down the stretch, but Lancaster Bible's lead was enough to hold on as they won 25-22.

In the early portion of set two, a back-and-forth ensued that saw the Chargers sneak out to a 12-9 lead after an Elijah Herb kill. Two three-point runs followed for each team after a bad set by Lancaster Bible tied the set at 15. A kill from Dawson Forney tied the game at 21. As the set was in the middle portion, it was tight late. Hiram took a 25-24 after a kill from Boehner forced a Chargers timeout. Lancaster Bible would take home the final three points of the set, winning 28-26.

After a Lancaster Bible 10-7 lead to start the third set, a kill from Montero evened the score at 11 a few points later. The Chargers captured four-of-five points pulling forward with a 19-14 lead. Hiram stormed back with six points in a row as the Terriers now held a 20-19 lead late. An attack error from the Chargers put the Terriers up 24-21, as they held on for the third set win at 25-23.

At the beginning of the fourth set, the Chargers raced out to a 7-3 lead. The lead held firm enough to where Lancaster Bible was now winning 14-10. A five-point run ending with a Boehner kill pushed the Terriers ahead at 15-14. The Chargers took a 20-17 lead with back-to-back kills from Herb as the Chargers now led 20-17 late. While Hiram cut the lead to 23-21, it wasn't enough as the fourth set went to Lancaster Bible by a score of 25-22

Supan and Montero led the team with 14 and ten kills. Matthew Albano had a team-leading 30 assists as he also totaled ten digs. Cory Fischer and Montero were first and second on the team with 12 and 11 digs.

Next on the schedule for the Terriers is their first home tri-match of the year. The team takes on Baldwin Wallace and Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, Feb. 5 from inside Price Gymnasium with first-serve scheduled for 1 p.m.
