Hiram Men's Volleyball Sweeps Saturday Tri-Match

HIRAM, Ohio – February 5, 2022 – Hiram men's volleyball picked up two wins in a non-conference tri-match vs. Baldwin Wallace and Eastern Mennonite. The Terriers beat the Yellow Jackets 3-1 then beat the Royals in straight sets in their second match.

MATCH #1: Hiram 3, Baldwin Wallace 1
Set one started as a back-and-forth affair with Baldwin Wallace posting a mini three-point run taking a 6-5 lead. A few points later, Hiram scored four-straight points capped by a Tom Supan kill making it 12-9 Terriers. After a BW kill, the Terriers rattled off another four-straight point now holding a 16-10 lead. The visiting side was able to cut the lead to 17-14, but the Terriers were able to hold on with some breathing room. Supan ended the first set with two kills in a row, with Hiram taking set one, 25-19.

Jumping out to an 8-4 lead, Hiram took advantage of some Baldwin Wallace errors early. The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to 13-11 after a Chris Moehl kill at about the midway point of the first set. Moving further into the second set, BW scored six-of-seven points tying it at 17. Hiram scored the next two points, then took a 22-20 lead after an attack error. Scoring three of the final four points of the set, Hiram held on for the 23-25 win.

Two errors from Hiram gave the Yellow Jackets the brief 8-5 lead early in the third set. As the set continued to play out, Nick Irelan picked a kill after a three-point run from BW putting the visitors up 16-13. Down the stretch of the third set, a back-and-forth affair ensued. An attack error from Payton Reed tied the third set at 19, which was followed by a BW run. The Yellow Jackets scored six of the final seven points, winning set three, 25-20.

After the fourth set started tied at six, four-straight points from Hiram were scored which was capped with a Supan kill. In the middle of the fourth set, the set remained tight. With Hiram down 19-18, the Terriers scored six of the final seven points winning the fourth set, 25-19.

Supan picked up a double-double getting 15 kills and 11 digs. Kilvio Montero reached the double-figure mark with 11 kills. Nathan Cassell and Cory Fischer each added 12 digs. Andrew Diaz de Padilla notched 36 assists.

MATCH #2 Hiram 3, Eastern Mennonite 0  
The second match of the day started well for the Terriers. After a Hiram service error putting EMU up 5-4, the home team went on a run. Back-to-back kills from Dangelo Boehner and Supan put the Terriers ahead 13-7. Down the stretch of the first half, the lead held steady. The final six points of the first half went Hiram's way with Supan getting a kill as the Terriers won 25-13.

In the second set, Hiram started the way they did in the first set slowly building their lead. Nathan Cassell picked up a kill putting the Terriers up 9-4. Multiple errors from the Royals put Hiram up 13-6 as the home team went up 13-6. The Terriers continued in the second set going up 21-10 after an attack error. The Royals went on a four-point run late, but the comeback wasn't enough with Hiram winning set two, 25-17.

Set three started with neither team getting too far ahead of each other. Two EMU errors saw the Terriers take a brief 12-10 lead. The Royals then took their biggest lead of the match going up 16-13 after two Drew Bennett aces. As the end of the set came closer, both teams traded points late. Down 23-21, Hiram was able to score five of the final six points going on to win set three, 26-24.

In match two, Supan once again led in both kills and digs with nine and eight. Freshman Matthew Albano racked up 20 assists in the victory.

With the two wins, Hiram moves to 4-3 on the year as the team remains undefeated at home with a 4-0 record.

Hiram next plays next Sunday, Feb. 13 in another non-conference tri-match. The Terriers travel to Springfield, Ohio, battling Wittenberg and Wabash with first serve at noon.
